In this number-one national best seller, "master storyteller" (Houston Chronicle) Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, tells the tale of the contestants of a grueling walking competition where there can beonly one winner - the one who survives.

In the near future, when America has become a police state, 100 boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Among them is 16-year-old Ray Garraty, and he knows the rules - keep a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings and you're out - permanently.

With an introduction by Stephen King on "The Importance of Being Bachman".

It is King's versatility, his skills as a writer, and his ability to tap into our fears that makes Uncle Stevie so eminently quotable. Even though King writes mainly terrifying books, his works are also full of wisdom, heart, humor, and compassion. He can be scaring your pants off one minute, and really making you think about humankind the next. Here are the best quotes from the master of the macabre: Stephen King.

Exceptional Character Development • Psychological Depth • Emotional Impact • Captivating Premise • Engaging Performance

Not only is Stephen King a master at his craft but so was Kirby in his performance of the Long Walk.

I will listen to anything read by him. He acts the story out so you are able to hear the characters shortness of breath. You could feel and here when they had a cold or bloody nose. His voice transported you directly into the line of walkers.

This story was nauseatingly gross at times yet amazing. Make no misunderstanding, this book is about personal progress and there are only are a few gut wrenching moments.

It's been a little while since I had a story that I couldn't stop listening to and I recommend this one highly !

Kirby H. read the hello outa this book!

A fairly interesting book about struggling against futility and the inescapable urge to bond with other people. Decent.

Kind of unhappy with the audio portion. First, there are MANY points in the narration where a word is clipped halfway through, then a pause until narration is resumed. I can't be sure without checking the physical book, but I don't think any full sentences are missing. Still, it's distracting and gives me a start whenever it happens. I assume this is an editing issue.

Second, the book frequently has characters yelling and screaming. As many narrations seem to, the narrator handles this with stage whispering/"whisper yelling". I really don't like this technique, but given how common it is I wouldn't normally remark on it except that it's the worst case of bad stage whispering I've heard. The narrator seems to drop to an ACTUAL whisper at points where the characters are screaming their loudest, seeming to get quieter the more he's trying to represent a yell. It's painfully awkward, takes the wind out of the sails of some dramatic moments.

The narrator was otherwise fine, as long as he wasn't tasked with portraying s character shouting.

OK story, irritating technical issue & narrator

One of the most engrossing King stories I've "read". It strongly benefits from shorter format.

As the reader read... the story seemed to skip. Still a good story and I really enjoy the Bachman writings .

MAJOR DISCLAIMER: this audiobook has multiple jumps in the audio where the end of a sentence will be clipped. I could always figure out what the word was, and it never jumped ahead a sentence, but it’s jarring and annoying if that sort of thing really bothers you.

I listened to The Long Walk primarily while walking to work or mowing the lawn, which is a powerful way to do it: empathizing with the competing characters during their grueling march to the death is a lot easier when you’re also sweating buckets and just wanting it to *END*, already!
The ending is somewhat ambiguous, which I’m not a huge fan of, but Stephen King’s strong suit (at least in the half-dozen or so of his books I’ve read) isn’t conclusions. He thrives when he’s allowed to build a world or connections between characters, and this novel is a prime arena for those two things. The Lord of the Flies-esque relations between the boys, the building tensions and split into groups, the few spare descriptions of this alternate militant America, and the walk itself: King describes excruciating detail the pains, fatigues, and stupid cramps or colds that are commonplace in the real world, but fatal on the walk.
King also manages to construct a compelling drama due to the Last Man Standing nature of the walk. You get to know the characters and root for your favorites, and it’s a very real tragedy when they, as the book puts it, “get their ticket.” The Hunger Games would come years later, and The Long Walk certainly isn’t the first book to have teenagers competing in a game of death, but King never loses sight of his protagonist and his friends’ age and maturities. Conflicts are inflated due to testosterone, one of the only things driving the narrator is his girlfriend back home, and the crowds on the side of the road are initially exciting. They all talk, think, and act like normal teenage boys.
But there are a few problems in the story. You can chalk them up to theme (things losing their meaning or importance in favor of survival) or accept that they’re open-ended, but a few questions come up that are never totally resolved. I won’t bring them up here, but it’s frustrating and feels like slightly sloppy storytelling. Generally, King’s great about remembering all the details and herrings that he throws into his books and returning to them. This might just be a product of earlier written stories, à la the Bachman publishing.
This was my first of his Bachman books, and overall I recommend it for audiobook. The parallel it has when working or walking is too good to pass up, otherwise it would be a library rental; maybe not one to take space on a bookshelf.

Gripping. Stark. Dystopian. And yet utterly warm, human and transformative. Stephen King's alter ego has a voice and style of "his own" that's still rooted in the easy-to-recognize talent of this master storyteller. The development of these characters over the course of their journey is fascinating, at times frustrating, and always fulfilling. The narration captures the essence of the author's voice, and relates the story's emotions without being intrusive.

The Long Walk is Well Worth Taking
