The author must be masochistic.
Revisado: 02-10-25
I love epic adventures but man, these characters can’t catch a break. Sure, rarely and few are the triumphs, but time after time things just continue to get worse and worse. This author must have an evil streak to do the things she continues to do to her characters. It’s remarkable and frightening.

I ended my life to protect Lucian from his enemies. It should have been the hardest decision to make, but it wasn’t. Now I find that Lucian kept even more secrets, deadly ones that threaten to destroy me. I thought I won the game that he and Katarina played, but he’s never stopped shuffling the pieces on the board. Even so, I’ve found peace in his violence and learned to accept my fate within his embrace. As our enemies are revealed, and worlds crashed down into ours, everything is on the line again. Could we survive his latest betrayal, or would it destroy us all?

Unexpectedly good imaginative series
Revisado: 12-14-22
Sometimes I found myself saying “enough already” during long drawn out sex scenes where he would repeat himself over and over again about “destroying worlds” for her and that “she’s mine” for eternity, so drawn out that it was neither fun or sexy. But when you get beyond that to the substance of the book you find a twisting story that’s intricate and surprising. The performances I also enjoyed and feel they did well.

Wonderful story.
Revisado: 11-22-22
This is by far my favorite legendary story. I love the different takes on it and this is one of the better ones!
I think the narrator could be so much better. She has the voices down, all she needs is to perform intense scenes like same way she does the passionate ones.
I can’t wait for the next!

Shallow slow burn with ZERO climax…
Revisado: 10-25-22
I honestly don’t know how to describe this book. Is it a romance? Well, chapter after chapter describing sexual build up but when it comes to doing the deed it’s described in 2 sentences ‘hinting’ what they did then boom! Done. Is it a YA book? Nope, too much “shit, fuck, hard-on”. Growth fantasy? Nope, the girl never matures, sure she gets her power but does NOTHING with it and keeps acting like a damaged adolescent. And the villain of this book, the doctor rapist; page after page of this evil guys action, but the climax is 3 sentences of her burning him for 5 seconds and boom, done. I’m sorry, how did this get published?
Performer is also baffling! What’s with the robotic narration? I mean, she acts out 80% of the characters brilliantly, but one dude is literally a robot. Back to her narration, sometimes when she’s just speaking normally it’s great, then she reverts to a monotone robotic narration with no inflection. What’s the deal, seriously it makes no sense at all?! And she’s a member of the same group as Tavia Gilbert? Tavia’s amazing btw. 1/3rd of the time this performer is good enough, then back to robo voice, which is really really bad.
The guy was good, but the author made the guy characters act like typical pigs, no depth at all.
There was just enough in this book to peak my interest thinking it’ll get better, but it got worse!

Historia
The new grandmaster of Whitehall doesn't want Emily in his school. She's dangerous, he thinks. The only way he'll allow her to return to Whitehall is if she chooses to be a probationary student, a student who can be expelled at the slightest excuse, a student who has to work for one of the professors. Reluctantly, unwilling to leave her first true home, Emily accepts. But she rapidly discovers that she's about to be pushed right to the limit.

I’m sorry, that was just painful…
Revisado: 09-24-22
This series has been interesting so far. With the exception of a few long winded pointless inner monologue instances I’ve enjoyed all the books so far.
Until this one. This book, to me, had a shallow plot and written as if the author was having an ADHD flair. The entire book was a long winded word salad and was written as if someone wrote down an entire day of a teen age girls thoughts and deed, word for word.
Also, it was remarkable how someone can throw a spell at her, and she can go on for a chapter her thoughts on what the enemy thinks of her, what the consequences are of why the spell was thrown, how the weather is, and what book she wants to read next, before the spell ever lands. Slight exaggeration, but it’s not far off, and this happens repeatedly throughout this book.
If it wasn’t for Tavia’s skill as a performer I wouldn’t have made it all the way through. The author is better than this.

Way too long winded…
Revisado: 09-23-22
Brenda has many books so much better than this. I’m really not sure what happened with this series. The long winded inner monologues and wordy extended irrelevant scenes have left me confused. Especially the authors insistence with characters repeating themselves over and over again.
I’m dumbfounded, Brenda’s so much better than this!
I like the performers variety of voices but it has to be played at 1.3-1.4x speed just to keep the stories continuity intact.

Imagine a world where this actually existed. “True mates” that is real and tangible where the love is continuing and everlasting.
I suppose it’s the down side of fantasy, where mankind can creat such worlds in imagination but fall so short in real life.
Maybe one day…

Historia
In the summer between second and third year at Whitehall, Emily accompanies Lady Barb on her rounds of the Cairngorm Mountains, bringing magical help to the locals and searching for new magicians. For Emily, tired and broken after the events of Study in Slaughter, it should be a chance to relax as well as to visit a new part of the Nameless World, to put her responsibilities aside and just be herself. But the locals aren't quite what she expects, with problems of their own, and Lady Barb is a different person away from Whitehall.

I mean, why is the heroin contemplating climate change and castles while fighting the necromancies, and why does she always do stupid things yet ALWAYS luck out to survive. Why can’t she just do something cool that she meant to do instead of doing great things but when it matters fumbling like a buffoon.
Ugh

The author seems masochistic.
Revisado: 09-05-22
The poor girl can not do a thing right and is constantly reflecting on how terrible her divisions are with very little written on what she’s doing to improve herself so she actually becomes the hero of the story instead of mistake after mistake after mistake, only luckily surviving a new world.
It’s quite frustrating to listen to. Tavia is amazing as always and I feel sorry she had to suffer through this entire book of detailed painful failures with 2 word solutions.
