Historia
In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" - the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker - offered a bottle of bourbon to the first US fighter pilot to break his record of 26 enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command.

This is an eyewitness - and eye-opening - account of some of the most savage and brutal fighting in the war against Japan, told from the perspective of a young Texan who volunteered for the Marine Corps to escape a life as a traveling salesman. R. V. Burgin enlisted at the age of twenty and, with his sharp intelligence and earnest work ethic, climbed the ranks from a green private to a seasoned sergeant.

Amazing first hand account with no fluff!!
Revisado: 09-09-24
a great account of combat experience without all of the nonsensical fluff that a majority of these types of books have at the beginning. it gets right into it. leaves you on the edge of your seat it's hard to imagine what these heroes went through but this is as close as you're going to get without being there yourself.

decent story could have been a lot shorter of a book however
Revisado: 07-03-24
The first half of this book will put you to sleep. every single detail is painstakingly remembered from the sites and sounds of shore leave to what girl was dating who. very very boring up front, the patrol then moves to Alaska where again painstakingly boring. The last half of the book finds them in the Pacific, absolutely fantastic heroism in action for this PT squadron. I understand it's a historical document, but half of this book could be omitted painlessly.

Historia
In 1942, Norman Hanson learned to fly the Royal Navy's newest fighter: the US-built Chance Vought Corsair. Fast, rugged, and demanding to fly, it was an intimidating machine. But in the hands of its young Fleet Air Arm pilots, it also proved to be a lethal weapon. Posted to the South Pacific aboard HMS Illustrious, Hanson and his squadron took the fight to the Japanese. Facing a desperate and determined enemy, Kamikaze attacks, and the ever-present dangers of flying off a pitching carrier deck, death was never far away.

yawningly boring
Revisado: 06-22-24
a rivet counting account of EVERY mondaine detail of a pilots life. the author describes every detail from waking up, what he drank, what he ate, what his friends did for fun, counts how many rivets are on an airplane, remembers every conversation with everyone he met over a 5 year span, what switches to press and what gauges to read the optimal temperature of the hydraulics, what clouds look like...on and on and on. only thing missing is the weather report of each day of the week from 41 to 45. painfully boring book with little mention about actual combat flying. wherever the action was happening, he was usually not there or placed as a backup. yawningly boring book

beautiful story of the greatest generation of Americans ever born
Revisado: 03-13-24
it is hard to put words without it seeming so underwhelming. as you read the book, I would suggest pausing from time to time and reminding oneself that these events actually happened into that the men in this story were all real. thank you so much Steven Ambrose for capturing in time forever a generation in which we Americans will never measure up to yet should always aspire.

Historia
In The German Aces Speak II, Heaton and Lewis paint a picture of the war through the eyes of four more of Germany's most significant pilots, put together from numerous interviews personally conducted by Heaton from the 1980s through the 2000s. The four ex-Luftwaffe fighter aces bring the past to life as they tell their stories about the war, their battles, their off-duty lives, their lives after the war, and perhaps most importantly, how they felt about serving under the Nazi leadership of Hermann Göring and Adolf Hitler.

Historia
Few perspectives epitomize the sheer drama and sacrifice of combat more perfectly than those of the fighter pilots of World War II. As romanticized as any soldier in history, the World War II fighter pilot was viewed as larger than life: a dashing soul waging war amongst the clouds. In the 65-plus years since the Allied victory, stories of these pilots' heroics have never been in short supply. But what about their adversaries - the highly skilled German aviators who pushed the Allies to the very brink of defeat?

you'll need to "hang tough" to get through this book
Revisado: 01-08-24
appropriately named "hang tough", because you will need to to get through this boring book. My first warning should have been the author Erik Dorr's involvement. Erik is the king of tourist trap trinkets with snake oil stories attached to them. this compilation of love letters turned into a book is completely a money grab opportunity using the hero Dick Winters name to draw in customers. the book is a compilation of all the love letters he exchanged during his wartime correspondence with his female friend. it's like eavesdropping on your grandfather talking about grocery shopping with your grandmother. The only thing of interest were the subtext thrown in here and there to explain actual events that Winters experienced in combat. again none of them were in the letters that he shared for obvious censorship reasons. this book is garbage put out by the Gettysburg museum of History. just like the questionable history pieces they have on display, this book is best left on a shelf. band of Brothers offers a way better account of Dick and easy company.
