Historia
If there’s one trait that makes someone well-suited to comedy, it’s being able to take a punch - metaphorically and, occasionally, physically. Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy - with a face you can’t help but want to punch.

I'd skip it
Revisado: 03-09-24
If you've read or listened to the other books in this series, you know that Matt Payne joins the Philadelphia PD in the early 1970s. So you'll be shocked that this work is set roughly in the late 90s or early 2000s, but with everyone still on the force, albeit promoted a grade or two in some cases.
The plot is OK, but the writing is not as tight as in previous works in the series.
The.narration.is.awful. I thought Dick Hill was bad until I heard Lawlor read this. I'd love it if there were a version of this read by Michael Russotto, who'd read 5/6 previous versions found on audible.
This will be my last stop in this series. My feeling is that WEB Griffin was a gifted storyteller, but his son (who co-authors the remainder of this series) is a hack. JMHO. YMMV.

Historia
Frightening, heartbreaking, and exquisitely calibrated, John le Carré's new novel opens with the gruesome murder of the young and beautiful Tessa Quayle near northern Kenya's Lake Turkana, the birthplace of mankind. Her putative African lover and traveling companion, a doctor with one of the aid agencies, has vanished from the scene of the crime. Tessa's much older husband, Justin, a career diplomat at the British High Commission in Nairobi, sets out on a personal odyssey in pursuit of the killers and their motive.

Listenable, but not LeCarre's best work
Revisado: 08-18-23
If you're expecting George Smiley, look elsewhere. African intrigue centered around a horrific murder and rape of an activist and the pursuit of her killers by her husband. The parts that rang most truthful were the scenes of exchanges among the British Foreign Office workers and their spouses - LeCarre seems most in his element here. In terms of plot, some of the actions of the characters don't quite seem to make sense. Also, the story seems almost gratuitously violent at points.
I wouldn't spend a credit, but it'd be worth picking up on a good sale. As always, I enjoyed Michael Jayston's narration.

Historia
When Marley McKinney's aging cousin, Jimmy, is hospitalized with pneumonia, she agrees to help run his pancake house while he recovers. With its rustic interior and syrupy scent, the Flip Side Pancake House is just as she pictured it - and the surly chef is a wizard with crêpes. Marley expects to spend a leisurely week or two in Wildwood Cove, the quaint, coastal community where she used to spend her summers, but then Cousin Jimmy is found murdered, sprawled on the rocks beneath a nearby cliff.

Revisado: 07-06-23
Very G-rated small-town murder mystery with some mild romance thrown in. While I think many kids would be bored, a family could listen to this on a long road trip without anyone being scarred for life. The narrator is first-rate. The owner of the local pancake shop is murdered. Are the culprits the people wanting to redevelop the site? The guy the owner loaned money? Thieves? The only thing missing is Lacy Chabert.
The storyline isn't groundbreaking.
The writer really likes her adjectives - and I'm not certain if that is a stylistic choice or was a was to hit word count goals.
The romance goes no further than kissing so you won't have to explain anything awkward to young listeners. I don't remember hearing any curse words.
The narration makes it listenable.

Can there be too much detail?
Revisado: 04-13-23
I think what I really wanted was the Spark Notes version of this. The work is very comprehensive. That said, it spends a lot of time setting up the air battle with a lengthy description of the Nazi invasion of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and spends quite a bit of time on Dunkirk. While it's all useful background, it's not the topic I came here to read about, which was the air war over England.

Flawed but atmospheric
Revisado: 02-03-23
At the outset, i have a bone to pick with Amazon. I bought this in part because the graphic says "Performed by Edward Hermann" who is a fine actor. The reading was fine, but it's by Don Hastings- OK, but not Ed Hermann. I kinda feel ripped off.
Story of a dying doctor on what is ostensibly a suicide hunting trip. Spoiler - the trip doesn't go as intended. No one exactly pins down the year of the story, but based on thing the characters say, it's sometime mid to late 1990s. This makes the free spirited young couple in the VW bus seem misplaced in time by 20-30 years.
Gutterson does a great job describing scenery, the angst and excitement of young lust, and the flashbacks to WWII and the early 40s. I thought the plot stretched credibility at the dog scene (if you listen, you'll figure out the one I mean) and goes off the rails after the bus ride. Your mileage may vary.
If you are expecting Snow Falling on Cedars, this isn't it. Worth a listen but I'd wait for a sale rather than spend a credit. If you are a fan of Edward Hermann, don't bother.

Historia
A Bridge Too Far is Cornelius Ryan’s masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshaled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters, Ryan brings to life one of the most ill-fated operations of the war.

Definitive retelling of Operation Market Garden
Revisado: 12-11-22
While I'd have preferred Scott Brick, my opinion is that Clive Chafer provides better narration than other reviews indicate.
ABTF is the definitive retelling of Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery's well-intentioned but ill-conceived attempt to seize a bridge head over the Rhine in the late summer/early autumn of 1944. Based on archival research and firsthand accounts from participants on all sides, the work is lengthy and can drag at some points. But the descriptions of the Red Devils doggedly fighting for survival in the false hope that land forces would arrive, as well as the heart-stopping description of the boat assault across the Waal to seize the Nijmegan Bridge in a last- ditch attempt to save the paratroopers ar Arnhem are riveting.

Revisado: 08-11-22
Not that you can go wrong with Cannery Row or The Grapes of Wrath, but East of Eden is Steinbeck's finest work . This is a well narrated audio book version of a novel that captures the many struggles of human nature, set against the backdrop of a California passing out of the frontier days of the 19th century into the modernity of the 20th.

Tried. Could not finish it. I've enjoyed the Smiley books and Agent Running in the Field was OK. Not this one. Narration is fine and LeCarre describes things well...too well. My take is that this is too heavy on atmosphere and too little advancing the damn story.

Revisado: 10-26-21
Love this book. A well researched, well-written story about a para-military terrorist organization hiring a professional contract killer to shoot Charles de Gaulle subsequent to Jean Bastien-Thiry's failed attempt at Petit-Clamart. That much is fact. The rest of the book is ostensibly fiction, but it's so realistic that if it were revealed that Forsythe wrote this based on a true story, you would not be the least bit shocked.
