Historia
Raised and trained in seclusion at a secret fortress on the edge of the northern wilds of the Kingdom of Ashai, a young warrior called Rezkin is unexpectedly thrust into the outworld when a terrible battle destroys all that he knows. With no understanding of his life’s purpose and armed with masterful weapons mysteriously bestowed upon him by a dead king, Rezkin must travel across Ashai to find the one man who may hold the clues to his very existence.

Fun and interesting, but the portrayal of women...
Revisado: 02-24-25
It's a fun concept, having the most lethal guy go out into the world for the 1st time after years of preparing, encounter various situations and people, apply what he has been taught, and slowly learn to make his own decisions for the 1st time in his life. He also goes on dangerous missions and just meticulously plans and executes everything perfectly. The way Rezkin applies his assassin logic to explain human behaviour and interactions he does not understand is hilarious and makes him a likeable main character.
But there is a downside to Rezkin being so overpowered - there are no gaps for other characters to fill. He is too capable, and the only character to challenge him a bit is the General. It often feels like other more important characters are just there as props. And I hate to say this, because the book was enjoyable, the world is interesting, and the narrator is very skilled and his voice embodies the characters so well. But sadly, the very limited nature of the side characters is glaringly obvious. Men are written better, but women are mostly just insufferable. Salivating over the main character is their ONLY job, besides getting into catfights and hating each other, and it continues for an ENTIRE 1st book. I wanted to root for them but I couldn't stand them. There is no need to be so heavy-handed, at the expense of the women in the book, at least the ones that are permanent characters. Rezkin is incredibly attractive, we get it. Can we focus on something else for a change when it comes to these girls?
Later in the book, we are made aware that Rezkin grew to care about one of the girls, even if he does not realize that consciously. But the supposed attraction is very unconvincing. Way too soon in the series, in my opinion. It's an out-of-character behaviour for Rezkin and his actively pursuing her feels forced, given everything we know about him. Her attraction to him is blind and his attraction to her is an afterthought, combined with suppressed hormones finally activating and peer pressure from other characters. It feels like It would take someone remarkable to match Rezkin and earn his affection. But the woman is written in a way that highlights nothing but her obsession with him. I thought that maybe her affection-worthy trait would be that she is kind to people and can help him understand kindness, and that's why she would become a special person to Rezkin. Nope. She cannot muster any sign of kindness towards a fellow woman who was injured. She proves to be the whiniest, most selfish naive little idiot ever. A child, compared to Rezkin. Does she have something she is passionate about, like a skill, or a cause? Nope. Just give me SOMETHING to root for, a trait that is completely her own and not about Rezkin. NOTHING. And no, learning knives does not count, because It was Rezkin who took all the steps for her to start training. He spoonfed her that stuff. The other girl wants to be a warrior. Surely, there is more to her than trying to get into Rezkin's pants? Again, nope.
Overall, I did enjoy the book, but the parts involving women tested my limits. Therefore, I am not in a hurry to continue the series. Maybe someday.

Erica Page, the protagonist of Amazon and WayForward’s upcoming game Til Morning’s Light, is already sick of the boring New England town that her family now calls home. However, when their research yields more-than-convincing results and tragedy strikes, it’s up to Erica to enter the mysterious mansion on Hamilton Road and discover the truth about her new hometown.

A cozy spooky story for kids, but-
Revisado: 01-06-25
It's just a prequel for a mobile game. The whole story was never supposed to be in a book format. The continuation was supposed to be you finding that game on Apple's App Store and wherever Amazon sells their apps. And I don't think the game exists anymore in any official capacity, which is a bit disappointing. It was a good hook for the game.
The story is not much, you just get to know the personality of the girl who is the main character. She encounters some supernatural activity, someone disappears, most likely by going to a haunted place, and the main character makes plans to go find them. That's it.
Therefore, it's just a hook that leads nowhere, and giving it a good rating would be unfair to the actual stories on Audible.

Written by AI, so don't spend money on this
Revisado: 01-05-25
Written by AI and read by AI.
Purely as a source of information, this works fine. It is structured, covers plenty of areas of child development that can be negatively affected by leaning too heavily on the convenient tools provided by modern phones, computers and the internet. If pure information is what you are after, like tips on what helps to counter the effects of technology on kids, this will do the job. Nothing in the "book", if you can call it that, jumps out as incorrect. That's why I begrudgingly rated it 2 stars overall.
But it's written in the driest academic essay style, devoid of any humanity and human experience. The wording is extremely stiff and repetitive. Makes you think you have accidentally restarted the chapter all the time. This is why AI-generated content will never provide a good reading or listening experience. This is also why I rated the story 1 star. And the hypocrisy of this AI-generated book to preach about how "overuse of digital tools can contribute to the lack of creativity and personal expression in writing" is incredible. Like, you don't say.

Gave me semi-nightmares
Revisado: 09-25-24
A super in-depth podcast. It's almost hard to believe these events unfolded in real life. They were that crazy. This poor woman.
*Spoiler Alert *
I can't imagine everything being self-inflicted, though. Maybe some things, But not the others.
I do believe the theory that this was somehow connected to those psychiatrists who abused women. The ones her husband might have known about/ been part of. I think it's a pretty solid theory. He was so weird about the whole thing. Would make a lot of sense. More sense than her beating, drugging, and tying herself up. When you think about it, the tactic of making the harassing so frequent, that the police would become tired of it and become dismissive, could have been the goal. It effectively chipped away at Cindy's credibility. And triggering the alarm a lot so that the neighbours would not even come to check anymore would be about the same thing.
The one surviving recording of the threatening call chilled me to my bones. I cannot even imagine the terror Cindy lived in.

What are we to make of “supernatural” issues such as the existence of ghosts and the possibility of miracles? Approach these and other topics from a critical thinker’s perspective. Along the way, examine the deeper issue at work here: what is - and what should be - the relationship between science and the belief in things we can’t see.

Mostly feels like a prologue
Revisado: 05-07-24
I admit, my expectations for the book were somewhat higher. I always get excited about lgbt fantasy. The cover art is gorgeous and the review score is high. But it turned out to have a very slow start and be slow in general, until chapter 30, or so. Then, it's a whirlwind of things. That's why most of the book feels like a very long prologue. But I was determined to see it through.
The worldbuilding is not very rich or interesting for the bigger part of the story. But the romance turned out quite okay. It feels refreshingly ordinary, without dramatics, and entangles with the plot well, without overshadowing anything. The relationship is a comfortable one, without trying too hard. I liked that, despite a few flirty lines that fell flat.
The narrator, unfortunately, did not add to the experience. I don't think he was the best choice for this particular book.
The plot, writing and characters are mostly steadily average. All of it has a good foundation, but not much on top of it to engage the reader and evoke emotion. A lot of the things you can see coming from a mile away, but it takes so long for the story to get there that it feels like a slog. Did not continue with the series

Well written but hard to enjoy due to complicated relationships
Revisado: 04-29-24
I like to savour the suspense, let the story sink in, chew on the details, and listen to the emotion in the narrator's voice.
The ending explained the behaviour, I understand there are valid reasons for it, but I still cannot get over everything and move on. Did the ending make all the emotional torture I felt reading this book worth it? Hell, no, it completely gutted me and I cried like a baby for one of the characters. Do not want to spoil anything. And the happy part of the ending just did not sit right after all the suffering. Both mine and the characters'. It was a good ending to the mystery and plot-wise, it's great. But it did not feel great to me, if you know what I mean. The book is so real and raw in many ways. But it might have been too real and too much (?) for me to enjoy listening to it. I was too upset at the characters and for the characters, and in the end, I could not even really blame any of them for what happened, because all were victims of their lives.
I decided not to continue the series. The narrator was wonderful, though, as he always is.

Really funny
Revisado: 04-16-24
The book won me over by being very funny. The story and characters also felt fresh and hard to predict. Felix especially is a very chaotic character that I find really entertaining.
I did not expect for the book to have as much action as it did - one of the characters is blind, after all. It's my first book by the author and I was not dissapointed. The narrator is not my favorite voice, but he did really well in this one.
