Doltish AI-written text

Not only is the narrator an AI creation, but so is the content. You’ll listen to long paragraphs in which nothing is actually communicated.

Historia
Dr. Aziz is a young Muslim physician in the British Indian town of Chandrapore. One evening he comes across an English woman, Mrs. Moore, in the courtyard of a local mosque; she and her younger travelling companion Adela are disappointed by claustrophobic British colonial culture and wish to see something of the 'real' India. But when Aziz kindly offers to take them on a tour of the Marabar caves with his close friend Cyril Fielding, the trip results in a shocking accusation....

Forster’s greatest

The narrator is brilliant, although I wish he didn’t feel the need to satirize Adela quite so much.

Historia
Aspects of the Novel is compiled from a series of lectures delivered in 1927 by E. M. Forster at Trinity College, Cambridge, in which he discussed the English language novel. By using examples from classic texts, he explores the seven universal aspects of the novel: story, characters, plot, fantasy, prophecy, pattern, and rhythm.

As thoughtful as you would expect
Revisado: 09-24-23
It’s Forster, after all. Funny and self-deprecating, the author of what may be the finest English novel sifts through aspects of the genre. It’s sometimes revealing to consider what he says in relation to his own _A Passage to India_.

Historia
Severely lacking in sleep from a recent bout of marathon investigative work, all Flynn wants is a proper night's rest. Unfortunately, at the early morning summons of his frantic daughter, he's off to the cemetery to rescue her young friend who's in quite a peculiar bind. And as the day progresses, a curious collection of puzzling cases fall into Flynn's lap, each one stranger and more urgent than the last. Buried secrets and dark motives come to light as he races to solve each crime and bring these seemingly disconnected matters to a full and complete case closed.

Mr. McDonald channels George Will
Revisado: 12-12-20
I used to love these books as a kid, and this was the first I had read in decades. It turns out to be another dumb screed against academia. Mr. McDonald did some deep research -- that is, he read some culture-war screeds in the newspaper -- and is sorry to have to inform us that Universities are teaching our children nothing but relativism and a hatred of "white males."

Historia
In the summer of 1994, when Molly Brodak was 13 years old, her father robbed 11 banks, until the police finally caught up with him while he was sitting at a bar drinking beer, a bag of stolen money plainly visible in the backseat of his parked car. Dubbed the "Mario Brothers Bandit" by the FBI, he served seven years in prison and was released, only to rob another bank several years later and end up back behind bars. In her powerful, provocative debut memoir, Brodak recounts her childhood and attempts to make sense of her complicated relationship with her father.

Any additional comments?
This is beautifully written and very hard to put down. You get hooked. I only wish the audio narrator were a little better. She seems to think that if a sentence contains the word "joy" then her voice must be in a rapture when she reads the word, or that she should growl when the subject of anger comes up. That may be a slight exaggeration, but she certainly should use less inflection and trust more in the writing and its ability to evoke the right emotion. In any case, the book is gripping and deep.

Historia
Under-appreciated until now, The Lost Girl is perhaps D.H. Lawrence's most beautiful, thoroughly contemporary, love story. This captivating novel charts the journey of a woman caught between two worlds and two lives, one mired in dreary, industrial England and a life of convention, the other set in the vibrant Italian landscape holding the promise of sensual liberation.

Great performance
Revisado: 10-20-05
This isn't my favorite Lawrence novel, but this reader is absolutely the best I have encountered in an audiobook. She is a rare find: a reader who really understands what is and what is not important in a novel, and who is conscious at every moment of what the prose -- and especially the dialogue -- means.

This is a good reading of one of English literature's most fascinating novels. Get this edition; Do not buy the Frederick Davidson reading, which absolutely the worst narration I've ever encountered.

Historia
This work set the style for a whole class of literature, a work that the critic Morton Dauwen Zabel calls an example of Conrad's "central theme...the grip of circumstances that enforce self-discovery and its cognate, the discovery of reality and truth...." It is a novel about a man's lifelong efforts to atone for an act of instinctive cowardice.

Terrible narrator -- Great novel
Revisado: 09-08-05
This is one of my favorite novels of all time; but this narrator is absolutely terrible. The passages in which Conrad's Marlow is clearly supposed to be speaking with a quiet, growling intensity are read by this narrator as if Marlow were a very bored and effete snob. He reads the entire novel this way. I bought this audiobook and couldn't possibly listen to more that ten minutes of it; so I got the Kandinsky reading instead (also available on audible.com), which is infinitely superior.
