Historia
From the time of the Norman Conquest to the present day, the New Forest, along England’s southern coast, has remained an almost mythical place. It is here that Saxon and Norman kings rode forth with their hunting parties, and where William the Conqueror’s son Rufus was mysteriously killed. The mighty oaks of the forest were used to build the ships for Admiral Nelson’s navy, and the fishermen who lived in Christchurch and Lymington helped Sir Francis Drake fight off the Spanish Armada.

This is a summary but not a good summary.
Revisado: 06-03-24
The narrator, actress, Lynn Redgrave is the only intriguing quality of this audio book. The book however, was assembled for summary kinda not great. It's almost as if they took 10 sentences from each chapter to summarize, before just moving on to the next scene. Edward Rutherford write large sweeping cohesive books with interesting characters. There is the thinnest of character development. It's hard to tell who is speaking and what is the value of their contribution to the story before it's off to the next character or scene introduction. Doesn't allow to become invested in any particular character or to pace the plot points with some anticipation.

Play by Play it Plods along.
Revisado: 05-12-24
It is a play by play of every turn of WWI and in every conversation they try to animate another page of history to leave no detail out. Not one detail. This book was very likely written by co-authors as it does not have the pitch or feel of Pillars of the Earth trilogy or the authors early works. Furthermore the character arc is usually what stands out in his stories. But, the war in all phases, places, and aspects is the central story in this book. Not the characters-- because after the initial ground laying of the narrative-- they see each other sparingly for the rest of the book. This is still way better than a lot of book offerings on the market. But it's a History channel book. However, the narration is very versatile and skilled.

Historia
With its promise of escape from the strains of everyday life, the beach has a hold on the popular imagination as the ultimate paradise. In The Last Resort, Sarah Stodola dives into the psyche of the beachgoer and gets to the heart of what drives humans to seek out the sand. At the same time, she grapples with the darker realities of resort culture: strangleholds on local economies, reckless construction, erosion of beaches, weighty carbon footprints, and the inevitable overdevelopment and decline that comes with a soaring demand for popular shorelines.

Beautiful ending.
Revisado: 03-09-24
Great ending. Sad. But hauntingly beautiful. The book reads like a movie. And he doesn't leave any loose ends, although short for a Michener. Historically and mischievously ichiban. A no punches time capsule.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

The narrator really held the story. Of course the author never misses a beat and keeps the plot engaging at every turn. Well done. Great for airplanes or trains- you'll likely stay entertained for the ride if this is what you're in the mood for.

Historia
Russka is the story of four families who are divided by ethnicity but united in shaping the destiny of Russia. From a single riverside village situated at one of the country’s geographic crossroads, Russia’s Slav peasant origins are influenced by the Greco-Iranian, Khazar, Jewish, and Mongol invasions. Unified by this one place, the many cultures blend to form a rich and varied tapestry. Rutherfurd’s grand saga is as multifaceted as Russia itself.

When The Far Pavilions was first published 19 years ago, it moved the critic Edmund Fuller to write this: "Were Miss Kaye to produce no other book, The Far Pavilions might stand as a lasting accomplishment in a single work comparable to Margaret Mitchell's achievement in Gond With the Wind." From its beginning in the foothills of the towering Himalayas, M. M. Kaye's masterwork is a vast, rich, and vibrant tapestry of love and war that ranks with the greatest panoramic sagas of modern fiction.
