The readers voice was awful when she was doing any voice except a girl. Sounded like a choking goose when doing a man.

A bad narrator can ruin a good book.
Revisado: 02-13-25
The narrator is awful. I’ve tried twice before to listen but the voice is awful. I read the book years ago and it’s a good book. I don’t know if I can make it through this time.

Historia
Deep Trouble relates the shocking story of a once prosperous boomtown and the shameful skeletons yet buried in a nearby pasture. The novel is based on actual events in Coal Hill, Arkansas, in the late 1800s when coal was king and convict labor helped keep it that way. The brutal truth that unfolded here stunned not only a state, but a nation.

Audiobook narrated by virtual voice.

. It put me off at first but I started listening. I have certainly heard worse narrations by humans to the point I couldn’t listen to the rest of the book. However the virtual voice actually does a good job once you get past that it’s not human. I would buy another audiobook with virtual voice.

Enjoyed the book overall
Revisado: 10-28-23
The history was pretty accurate. The voice actor wasn’t the best I’ve heard but she didn’t ruin the book as some do. In fact it suited the book. The book itself seemed just a little flat but it was good enough for me to buy the next book.

Historia
When the Black Death enters England through the port in Dorsetshire in June 1348, no one knows what manner of sickness it is - or how it spreads and kills so quickly. The Church cites God as the cause, and fear grips the people as they come to believe that the plague is a punishment for wickedness. But Lady Anne of Develish has her own ideas. Educated by nuns, Anne is a rarity among women, being both literate and knowledgeable. With her brutal husband absent from the manor when news of this pestilence reaches her, she looks for more sensible ways to protect her people than confession.
