Contrived negative abuse of a child

The author just goes on and on endlessly to make the main character’s life as miserable as possible. Tons of people have reviewed this book and given it high ratings but the nonstop worst case scenarios to a child make the story unbelievable which makes the reader numb and unempathetic. It’s too much. Too contrived. Too negative and therefore the author lost me. I tried to soldier through bc soooo many people liked this book as a favorite but must not be readers of good literature😂

Story is about as original as the word “the.” Narrator pronounces words incorrectly and monotone. The round and round with the “mean prosecutor” added to its tired monotony. Women are window dressing.

The writing was hard to tolerate and dour in the beginning of the book — felt very cliche and tired. Got a little better when the two main female characters meet but their irritating banter and the cliche storylines made me think that the author was new at writing fiction— turns out, she is. What kept me listening was the potential for the story line in relation to the title of the book. I could see, and would like, a story about people helping people move forward and heal in life. So the book got a little better once the main character started acting her age (40) and asserting herself. The end was lazy and trite— all the novel’s storylines come together in a tidy bow. The middle of the book is way more compelling than beginning and end.

Excellent. Great characters and story. I just love how the author submerges us into that era in British history so completely and with humor. Gentle English universal human humor. I can’t wait to read another Charles Finch Lenox detective novel.

This review was paid for by no one! Just my honest enjoyment expressed.

I’m not religious but raised Catholic and this book rings true and close to my heart. Well told story.

I love many of Ann Patchett’s books. State of wonder, the Dutch house. Bel Canto. Tom Lake didn’t click with me as much. Probably would have been better to read this book than listen to it to follow the characters better— due to duplicate Emilys and jumping back and forth - found that confusing via audible. Yet I always appreciate and admire the depth of the characters and story in Ann Patchett novels bc I learn so much about new things and that is still what this book delivers. Just not as engaging as some of her other works.

Boring. Very disappointed. Reading of letters back and forth between wronged spouses for 28 chapters.

After reAding so much awful “bestseller” fiction that was so u satisfying and a waste of time— this is meaty and well done — weaving of very complicated human “stuff” about a family and how the personalities evolve over a lifetime. Interesting book.

While this book went on and on forever — I mean 17 hours plus of audible narration—-it was one of those books that led me down the garden path to nothing really. Full of stuff that is hard to believe or accept but was written in a way that made me want to keep going on the very bitter end with the story. So I give it a 3 :-/

Filled my listening needs till my next credit arrives 😂. Always amazes me that non fiction lacks drama. The story telling comes from a cop so I guess Just The Facts Ma’am. Did like knowing a little more about recent LA history even though I lived through these times right in the hills of Hollywood — had no idea of biker gangs.
