Once described, by a workshop participant as 'Creating verbal, herbal magic', Amanda Edmiston (Botanica Fabula), comes from a long line of storytellers, plant people, writers, and artists. She was brought up believing that knowledge of legends, fairy tales, history, art and plants was vital to life, but having done drama in college, then had an accidental career in catering, she first studied law at university, imagining a glorious career upholding human rights, before being thwarted by the stressful system. She then studied herbal medicine but elected not to go into clinical practice when she became a mum. Finally fed up with not knowing what she would do with her life she invented 'herbal storytelling' and has since developed an incredible international professional practice that shares her passion, thanks to the never-failing belief of her mother: artist and storyteller: Jean Edmiston. Currently based in rural Scotland, not so far from where she was born, but working wherever the wind takes her. Amanda's herbal storytelling has, since 2011, taken her on an incredible journey. She has woven words for Chelsea Physic Garden in London, taken Scottish folklore and regional plant use and legends to the National Museum of Rural Life in Scotland and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, created new fairy tales informed by the experiences of staff and patients at a The Crichton, a former mental hospital and shared historical secrets concealed within stories at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow amongst many others. She has also created work for schools and organisations in China, America, and Singapore. As part of her practice Amanda also collects stories and memories of plant use from across rural Scotland, to share, with her Kist in Thyme projects, many of these stories and anecdotally shared recipes and plant lore have found their way into the Time Traveller's Herbal. She currently lives not far from the meadow she shares stories from within the book, with her brilliant, handsome and hugely supportive husband (who did not write this bio despite being asked), her two beautiful but distracting children and an enthusiastic and energetic Springer Spaniel. Amanda is an associate member of The National Institute of Medical Herbalists and you can discover more about Amanda and her work on her website www.botanicafabula.co.uk
