Publisher's summary

Set in the near future where the male birthrate has dropped to unsustainable levels, Cassie receives a phone call saying she's been matched with someone, but she'll only get one day to make the most of her pairing. Maybe if the guy she was matched with wasn't the hot guy she'd worked with years ago, it'd be less nerve wracking.

Adult Syfy Romance Short Novella

In the near future, with a plummeting male birthrate, a woman wins a chance to procreate. Think Logan's Run meets Handmaid's Tale without ideological angst. Story justified adult consensual sex. Narrator does a solid professional job, complete with location and age appropriate characterization.

Not a fan.

I received a free audiobook code in exchange for an honest review.

The story's idea was interesting (hence the 2-star rating). That's what caught my attention. Needless to say, if I had attempted to physically read this story, I wouldn't have finished. I don't like leaving bad reviews but, it is what it is. Let me explain...

Let me start by saying, this was false advertising, in my opinion. As I said, the idea was different and so much could have come from it, even in a short story: futuristic, low male population, getting pregnant by a stranger/man in a day, etc. But this was just erotica. If I had known that, I wouldn't have asked for a code. I'm not a fan of major romance in a story (like it solely focuses on that) or erotica. I find both genres boring.

I loved the narrator's voice but it's so obvious she's new. She wasn't so much narrating, per see, but reading. I could easily imagine her getting to the end of the line, pausing, and her eyes going to the next line. There were also super long pauses between the scene breaks. Way too long! And, lots of stumbling over words. Why she wouldn't have reread those parts, I don't know. I also wish she would have done a different voice for Cassie and not her regular voice that she used for the narrative part of the story. I'd give her another try though after she's had more practice.

Moving on to the story, there was so much repetition, which I can't stand. Here's an example:
Having sex for two days “...wasn’t exactly a fairytale SITUATIONS. Two days of incredibly intimate SITUATIONS…”

The writing was meh. The fact there were two writers was interesting, and up to this point, whenever I read or listen to two-writer stories, it never ends well. So I guess that streak continues. In this case, there was just nothing to it. It had so much potential. There are thousands... millions? of erotic stories just like this.

What was the point of having the sensor thing if it was just going to be removed shortly after? That was the only "futuristic" aspect of the story.

I found it interesting that Cassie would think she was scared as "heck" but then went on to refer to her genitals as a "pussy" and having sex as "fucking" when she was a virgin when she arrived.

So she had worked with... I forgot the guy's name... years prior so he already knew about her body insecurities. That just seemed strange to me.

The funniest/strangest line was something like "I could feel the water running down my soft down fuzz of my groin. Besides the repetition here, I was like "huh?" Her soft down fuzz? That just made me think her groin was covered in peach fuzz and sounded gross. Either way, I've never heard of pubic hair referred to in this way.

Lastly, the "bed chamber?" Did we suddenly go back in time? There were no other "past era" words used until the end with bed chamber.
