About this listen

One book, two missions, and a memory key full of secrets!

After a series of terrorist attacks on fracking sites owned by a gas multinational named Drilsink, Sir James Aiken’s agency is bought in to find the radical eco-terrorist group responsible. He sends Sam and Declan to work undercover at Imperial College where Intel suggests the group are recruiting. While Sam works behind the scenes, Declan takes on the identity of geologist Dr. Tobias Hunter and soon makes an enemy of a fellow science geek - a man who Declan comes to despise more than Sir James Aiken!

When the operation moves from London to Munich and then Vienna, Sam, and Declan are thrown headlong into a spy scenario straight out of the thriller novels they love to read - but with a distinct and disturbing sexual twist! Sam meets an old friend and uncovers shocking information about James’ past.

With Erik Madsson still imprisoned inside the ALL HQ, James comes to realize that he should have listened to his son. Keeping the enemy inside his own home is about to be the biggest mistake he has ever made.

This audiobook is an M/M romance thriller and therefore contains graphic gay sexual references.

WOW!!!

With each book I hate Sam's dad more and more. Sam and Declan are priceless as undercover spies. The disguises are intriguing, and I loved the make out sessions in disguise. lol. That last fight had my adrenaline pumping. The ending was glorious. I cheered like a lunatic until the epilogues! Sam' dad will never quit, but what's next???? The narrator did a great job. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this story and am giving an honest review.

Outstanding Narration

Powder Burns is ingenious, thrilling, current, steamy and hot AF, complex, passionate, addictive, playful, intriguing and a must listen to all of Sam, Declan and Shatterproof Bond Series fans.

Gary Furlong is the BEST. His range of voices and accents is unparalleled. He easily and brilliantly goes from speaking English with Scottish, Brittish, Irish, Continental , Scandinavian and German accents; to perfectly speaking German and Danish language.

Loved listening to this audiobook . Don't even mind it ended in a BIG cliffhanger.

Powder Burns

This is a wonderful series. I highly recommend that you start with book 1 in the series so that you have a full understanding of the background of Sam and Declan. Their love and bond has been tested over and over by family, friends, and career but they continue to build their future.
It was great that we got to see how Declan responded when faced with Sam’s previous lovers. Also seeing how Sam truly loves Declan and wants to build a new life with him away from his father and current career. There are so many turns that this story can take and I loved that the next book was set up so well. Can’t wait. Keep up the great work Ms Starling.

Too much going on...

The book was good...that's not my issue! What I struggle with is keeping everyone straight and following the plot. This book could have been two books as it was twice the length of all the other book. This was my first book with this narrator and author and yes, I bought the entire series and will definitely pick up the next book but I hope the author focus on one central plot..

Spectacular! Gary Furlong's Performance is Amazing

Isobel Starling’s Shatterproof Bond series just keeps getting better and better! The dark, intriguing story surrounding Sam and Declan continues to build in the fifth novel, Powder Burns. A wonderfully complex cast of characters keep an incredible mystery flowing along, and I’ve been continually stunned by all the twists and turns! Meant to be read in order, you need to start with As You Wish, where it all begins.

If you’re going to take the plunge, I highly recommend you do this series in audio. Performed by the amazingly talented Gary Furlong, I can’t imagine any other narrator could even come close to doing this amazing story justice. With the incredible variety of accents, dialects, and languages Ms. Starling includes in this series, I can’t help but wonder if she wrote the Shatterproof Bond series just to hear Mr. Furlong perform it.

The thing I love the most about all of Isobel Starling’s writing is that I can never tell where her stories will go next. Little details turn out to have a huge impact, things come back to haunt, and unexpected events propel the story in a completely different direction from what I’d expect, and it makes for an incredible experience.

In addition to the unique and clever plotline in the Shatterproof Bond series, Ms. Starling creates spectacular chemistry between the characters. There’s an intricate web of personalities in this cast. I’m loving the darkness of the secrets these people are keeping, and there’s no end to the depth of their depravity.

One of my favorite romance authors, Isobel Starling outdoes herself with Sam and Declan’s relationship. She blends sensual BDSM scenes, erotic power exchanges, and tender, playful games into their coupling and the result is stunning. These two men are amazing together, and for me, there’s nothing better than hearing Gary Furlong bring their lovemaking to life.

I truly thought Powder Burns was going to be the final episode of the Shatterproof Bonds series and I’m thrilled to find out there’s to be at least one more book. Starling leaves us with a brilliantly written cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to see where the adventure goes from here!

Another Hit For This Series

I love this series and have read all the books, but listening to Gary Furlong's fantastic narration makes Isobel Starling's excellent writing and characters pop.
Married for one month now, Sam and Declan's latest assignment sends them to Imperial College to investigate an eco-terrorist group planning to attack a fracking site. This then leads them to Germany, where Declan becomes the target of the terrorist group who have framed wealthy men in sex scenes and blackmailed them to fund their terrorist activities. While hacking the servers to get the blackmail videos, they find one of particular interest to Sam and Declan that may be their way out of ALL and out from under the thumb of Sir James.
This series gets more intriguing and old story threads begin coming together as the excitement continues. Well worth the listen!

enjoyed it

📖 Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, interesting plot.
I enjoyed this series when it was first released in audio back in 2017 and each subsequent release had me go back and relisten to each book in the series before embarking on the next new adventure, with the release of The Rebel Candidate I went back again, and all these years later continued to enjoy each book all over again.

Counterblow: double the usual length so we get what feels like a "full" story, which I really enjoyed. The pace is good and there's always something going on.. secrets, so many secrets. The chemistry between Sam and Declan jumps off the page - even with the appearance of Alexander (Sam's old professer - refer "Top Hat").

I enjoy Sam and Declan's undercover work. Their disguises flow together seamlessly and I enjoy the way they get into character and maintain it. I love Sam's endless disguises and skills in his repertoire and of course the Princess Bride references sprinkled throughout the book are delightful.

🎧 Narrator comment: Gary Furlong is a perfect choice for a series heavy in dialects - he perfectly captures Sam and Declan in the spirit of "Wesley and Buttercup". His characters voices are consistent across the series, I had no problem distinguishing characters and the rhythm, inflections and intonations all worked to make the book (and series) come alive.
