The Autobiographical Story of the Opening of the Far North There was a time not so very long ago when the Hudson’s Bay Company ruled the north. A time of silky furs, Indian skirmishes, canoes, “jawbone”, dog sleds, traps, and sourdoughs. Adventure came easy in this silent land of the far north. Henry John Moberly surely had plenty of it. Nearly 50 years he spent among the native and white trappers as a fur trader, trapper, hunter, and explorer. Moberly opened many of HBC’s most remote Trading Posts. The struggles of the north, the unbearable cold, the humor of the frontiersmen, the ...

Story
Shortly before the US Revolutionary war against England, most inhabitants were her loyal subjects. France had control of much of southern Canada and the “western” lands of the current states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Skirmishes abounded for years between English settlers pushing west and French settlers and their Indian accomplices. This story includes depictions of the battles of Forts Duquesne and Necessity in Pennsylvania, and Forts Ticonderoga and William Henry in New York, and Quebec in Canada.

Story
You’re invited on a tour of the Great White North in search of the ever-elusive Sasquatch. Canada is the second largest country in the world yet only about twenty percent of its landmass is inhabited by humans. Vast swathes of wilderness provide habitat for such large predators as the cougar, bear, and wolf. Witnesses from across Canada agree that there is another, unknown creature stalking the Canadian wilds - the giant, bipedal, ape-like creature known as Sasquatch. While a great deal of research has been done on Sasquatch sightings in British Columbia, the other provinces of Canada ...

Just before her 40th birthday, Gail Francis quit her perfectly good job and set out to hike one of the great trails of the world. Carrying everything she needed on her back, Francis spent five months walking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, she lost her pack scrambling over scree in the desert, struggled to navigate high mountain passes, and wore the soles off her boots trekking across lava fields - all within some of the most pristine wilderness in the nation. Though she set out alone, her story includes an eclectic cast of characters.

Story
On September 4, 1944, Antwerp, Europe’s largest port, fell to the Second British Army and it seemed the war would soon be won. But Antwerp was of little value unless the West Scheldt Estuary linking it to the North Sea was also in Allied hands. In his greatest blunder of the war, Field Marshal Montgomery turned his back on the port, leaving the First Canadian Army to fight its way up the long coastal flank. By the time the Canadians and others serving with them reached the area, it had been transformed into a fortress manned by troops ordered to fight to the death.

Story
Canada is not one nation, but three: English Canada, Quebec, and First Nations. Yet as a country Canada is very successful, in part because it maintains national diversity through bilingualism, multiculturalism, and federalism. Alongside this contemporary openness Canada also has its own history to contend with; with a legacy of broken treaties and residential schools for its Indigenous peoples, making reconciliation between Canada and First Nations an ongoing journey, not a destination.

Roald Amundsen was the most successful polar explorer of his era using sledges, dogs, skis, and ships. He is mainly remembered for being the first man to reach the South Pole on December 14, 1911. What is less often remembered is that he was also the first man to reach the North Pole on May 12, 1926, as the leader of the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile expedition in the airship Norge.

Story
McKenna Barney is trying to hide her worsening eyesight and has been isolating herself for the last year. But at the request of her little sister, she signs up for a commemorative mail run race in the Canadian wilderness - a race she doesn't know if she can even see to run. Winning would mean getting her disease - and her sister's - national media coverage, but it would also pit McKenna and her team of eight sled dogs against racers from across the globe for three days of shifting lake ice, sudden owl attacks, snow squalls, and bitterly cold nights.
