Chicago, 1938. Late one night, before the 10:00 show, the body of a prominent radio actress is found dead in the station's lounge. All the evidence points to murder and one young up-and-coming radio actress, Vivian Witchell, as the next victim. But Viv isn't the type to leave her fate in the hands of others - she's used to stealing the show. Alongside charming private detective Charlie Haverman, Vivian is thrust into a world of clues and motives, suspects and secrets. And with so much on the line, Viv finds her detective work doesn't end when the "On-Air" light goes out.

Christmas has come to Chicago and Vivian Witchell is looking forward to nothing more than spending the holidays with family and friends - and maybe spotting her picture in a few radio magazines. But the discovery of a mysterious envelope stuffed with cash in her late father's study sets Vivian into a tailspin, as she discovers that her beloved father may not have been exactly who she thought he was, and who may in fact have been working with the most notorious mob boss of the time.

Viv has finally gotten up the courage to introduce Charlie to her extended family and brings him to their luxurious cottage on Lake Geneva. But the visit gets off to a rocky start when Hap, an old flame of Viv's, unexpectedly turns up. Charlie clearly feels threatened by Hap, but Vivian is sure that it will all blow over - until Hap turns up dead in the game room, with Charlie standing over him, covered in blood and holding a knife. Viv knows that Charlie couldn't have killed Hap, but how can she prove it and get him released from prison?
