From a traumatic upbringing that left him nearly silent until the age of five, Ryan found his voice through music. He shares his path from discovering composition as an outlet to moving to Vancouver, BC, where he broke into the world of film scoring. Ryan walks us through his evolution from composing for TV, film, and video games to his transition into sound design—unpacking what video game sound design truly entails.

Tune in for an insightful conversation about resilience, creativity, and the power of sound.

Ryan Eston Paul grew up in Portland, OR, playing in metal and rock bands before discovering a passion for composition. By 2006, he settled in Bellingham, performing with Cat Delicious before shifting to film and TV composition, working on Pranked, Alone, Amish Haunting, and The Daily Show. A lifelong gamer, he expanded into video game sound design in 2010. Today, he composes, designs sound, and mixes audio for Children of the Setting Sun Productions while contracting for game developers.

  • Hannah Wyatt
    Jan 2 2025

Tim Mechling interviews Hannah Wyatt in this episode of Shut Up and Listen, delving into the journey behind her new album Sunday Cowboy, the vibrant folk music scene in Bellingham, and much more.

Hannah Wyatt is an emerging indie folk artist based in Bellingham. Her melancholic sound has blossomed over the years with influence from a score of artists the likes of Keaton Henson, Joe Purdy, The Civil Wars, Radiohead, Sparklehorse, and more. Trained as a classical violinist, she saturates her music with lush strings and harmonies, often sinking into warm lofi coziness, then floating back to a more organic, folky sound.

  • City of Pines
    Dec 26 2024

Chrvns and Tim Mechling sit down with Nick Clack to delve into his indie project, City of Pines. The conversation explores how his day job as a teacher shapes his songwriting and provides insight into his creative process for writing and recording. They also discuss his experiences touring major European festivals and reflect on his time living in Ukraine, where he not only recorded music but also played a role in delivering supplies to the front line. The episode wraps up with an exciting preview of City of Pines’ upcoming album, set to release on January 25th.

City of Pines is a Pacific Northwest indie folk rock music project founded by Nick Clack in 2017. Inspired by the region’s dramatic landscapes—rain-soaked foggy hills, majestic snow-capped mountains, craggy coastlines, and towering trees—the music reflects the adventurous and reflective spirit of the PNW. The project began with demos recorded in a beach cabin on Camano Island and quickly expanded internationally. Nick traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to record at Studio 211, followed by a European tour.

In 2023, Clack reunited with his Ukrainian producer, now a refugee of war, to record a full-length album in Sweden. Tyler joined the project in 2020 as an electric guitarist and contributed to the songwriting and vocals on the new album, Wander. Both Clack and Tyler are originally from the Stanwood/Camano area and met, ironically, through Tyler’s mother. Together, they have performed along the I-5 corridor and are actively booking new shows to promote the upcoming album release.
