On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Florida Panthers Historian Francisco Oporta (@fjojr and @FLACatsHistory) to the show to break down Canada's 3-2 OT win over the USA in the Four Nations Face-Off Championship. The two discuss the success of the tournament and that it gave hockey fans everything they wanted on a true best-on-best tournament. Canada at times set the pace, and did so early with a goal five minutes into the game where Nathan MacKinnon struck again. USA then would score shortly after juggling their lines, putting Auston Matthews with the Tkachuk brothers. USA then took the lead into the second period thanks to Jake Sanderson, and after a tight third period where the USA was starting to take control, they couldn't capitalize. Jordan Binnington came through in the over time period off a short side shot off a rebound by Brady Tkachuk, and then shortly after, Canada won a draw in the USA zone, where Adam Fox and Auston Matthew went to chase the puck, leaving Connor McDavid wide open in the slot, where his shot got past the glove of Connor Hellebuyck for the Golden goal. McDavid was contained for the most part, but one mistake proved costly for the Americans. Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett were the Panthers to come out victorious in the tournament, and Matthew Tkachuk tried giving it a go after getting hurt in the first matchup against Canada. Matthew Tkachuk played one shift after the nine minute mark of the third period, but couldn't finish the rest of the game. What does that mean now for when the Panthers return to action? On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Calgary Native Kirby Lupul (@KJ_Lups) of the Cats n' Rats Podcast to break down the big day at the Four Nations. The two break down the animosity from the start of puck drop with three fights in nine seconds, where it brought the excitement of what fans have been missing from the lack of international hockey. Canada took the lead after Connor McDavid finished on a breakaway. After that, the USA played a tight game, where they didn't give up a goal the rest of the way, USA took the lead in the second period, and the teams played a tight game from there on. USA with the win advances to the final, and they did so without Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk, who took himself out of the game with just under 13 minutes left in the third period. Finland took on Sweden earlier in the day where Sweden took the early lead after a turnover by Barkov that ended up in the back of their net. Finland took the lead before the end of the first on the power play, and the Swede's made a goaltender change after Filip Gustavsson gave up two goals on four shots. Linus Ullmark took it the rest of the way. Sweden was the most opportunistic bunch as Finland's coontrolled play for the first five minutes, but couldn't capitalize, and Sweden scores two straight. Finland however ended the period on a high note with Aleksander Barkov getting a goal on a tip-in. The third became tight as neither scored, but less than two minutes into overtime, Finland's Mikael Granlund won it in overtime to give Finland a chance to advance with a regulation win on Monday afternoon. The two discuss the scenario's, Tkachuk's availability, and if the Canadian's should stick with Jordan Binnington. What should USA's approach be if Sweden is eliminated before the drop of the puck on Monday night? On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brought in Nich Fairbanks (@Prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two break down USA's 6-1 win over Finland where the American's broke through after Mike Sullivan decided to put Brady and Matthew Tkachuk on the same line. Finland got the first goal of the game, and played a structured game for the first 40 minutes. USA's power play was a struggle, but 5-on-5 play set the tone early on for them. Brady set the tone with his level of physicality, which made it a more physical game than what fans saw for Canada-Sweden on Wednesday. Finland held USA shotless for the first seven minutes of the second period, but a goal by Matt Boldy gave the American's the lead heading into the final frame. Not only did they have a lead, but they were on the power play to start, which they wasted no time lightning the lamp thanks to Matthew Tkachuk. It was one of his two power play goals on the evening, and even had a secondary assist on Brady Tkachuk's second goal of the game. USA scored three times in 2:45 to break the game open, and now are leading the table with three points after every team has completed one game. Canada was energized off the pregame introductions when Mario Lemieux was part of it, scoring on the power play less than a minute in. Sweden struggled in the first 15 minutes of the game where they had a hard time getting their cycle going. Things settled down in the second period as they were able to eliminate Canada's speed, allowing them to cut it to one, and doing so again in the third period to force overtime. Canada then gained full control back with the open ice three-on-three, with Sidney Crosby dropping the puck off to Mitch Marner, who came up the gut with speed to beat Filip Gustavsson past the blocker to give the Canadians the two points. Crosby had three points on the night, including the early goal to Nathan MacKinnon. Canada went the rest of the way with five defenseman after Shea Theodore went to the locker room after getting hit on the boards by Adrian Kempe. How did the two Panthers who played in this game fair? NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the World Cup of Hockey is coming back, and the hockey continues on Thursday as the USA takes on Finland in night two.
