The year is 2061. The Red Dragon Crime Syndicate is king, and for all those lucky enough to be members of this crime family, life is damn good. Well, not for everyone.... For two entry-level gangsters in Tharsis City, Mars, life in the Syndicate isn’t quite all guns and glamour. That’s right. Long before they were mortal enemies, Spike Spiegel and Vicious were just two friends clawing their way up the crime ladder and trying to have a little fun while doing it. But when an opportunity to pull a job for their boss arises, it’s make-or-break time.

Story
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

Story
New York Times best-selling author and star of 2 Dope Queens Phoebe Robinson is back with a new, hilarious, and timely essay collection on gender, race, dating, and the Dumpster fire that is our world. Written in her trademark unfiltered and witty style, Robinson's latest collection is a call to arms. Outfitted with on-point pop culture references, these essays tackle a wide range of topics: giving feminism a tough-love talk on intersectionality, telling society's beauty standards to kick rocks, and calling foul on our culture's obsession with work.

Story
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

My name is Drew Hayes, and for the past six years I've made my living as a writer. In that time, I've published 20 books, written hundreds of thousands of words, and made countless mistakes - most of which I like to think I've learned from. Underqualified Advice (and Other Amusing Diversions) is my attempt to compile those lessons and share them with others, as well as have some fun along the way. Half of the book is dedicated to detailing specifics about writing, maneuvering the industry, and keeping fiscally afloat in largely unstable waters.

I had higher hopes
I haven't listened to Audicted in the past but no one in my life nowadays shares my interest in Sci-Fi, so I looked forward to listening in on a discussion among people who do. That's not so much what I got. It was a kind of halting conversation among three, probably very nice but, not particularly interesting people who spent most of their time comparing neuroses. They did manage a half-hearted conversation about, if I recall, 3 books and 2 stories but, if they had edited out all of the "likes," "you knows" and "ums," They would have had time for that many again.

Excited to follow this new series!
Thank you, Sam, Emily, and Sean - the podcast was enjoyable on many levels, and it really helped me feel connected to the writing and listening world we’re in right now.
One suggestion, please: it would be very helpful if you could repeat a quick list of the books and authors at the end of the podcast, for folks like me who don’t have great memories and don’t take notes as we listen.
I look forward to enjoying several of the ones you mentioned. Thanks again!

Interesting ...
I did listen to the "Forward" series (for free). Popular authors. These are short and pretty good. It is interesting that they mentioned this. It is a 'Zon product - so yes of course. But they were good. So do it again? They were all Sci-Fi.
Short works are key - the listening experience is close to movie length - attention span thing. I write for audio as short works in Sci-Fi ... so take a gander. Second audiobook out soon of a series
I wish ACX/Audible would create a Select section for Sci-Fi like they do Escape (romance - ugh! gag!) There are more than enough titles. But the author's would have to sign up and be accepted - so would authors jump in? I think so. The books are too expensive (the <3 hour range --- $6.95 for a 1.5 hour audiobook - really?) and not worth the CREDIT to save the $. Thus traffic is low for those authors. But if there were a Select program for Sci-Fi? This could be managed by Audible/ACX and generate revenue for Audible and the authors.
The good sci-fi tends to be short. Paying for all the audiobooks you want can be expensive. So can you make a Select Audible Sci-Fi section like you do Escape? I would buy in. I can get them free with promo codes from Unleashed. But short works are hard to find there. I want short good Sci-Fi. Forward was great..
There really are not that many titles in Escape (and they are pretty long too). I think a Select Sci-Fi section would do much better. As an author i would get more traffic I think. eBooks are a bust so far - way to many eBooks (but I get good short works for free - (Top 100 Free)). Trying Goodreads, hope that is better for traffic. But Audio can be the next big thing in short Sci-Fi
So the point of this episode is to ...? See the interest in Sci-Fi ... maybe ...

Fun listen ignored bad reviews
I enjoyed this and valued their recommendations, having already listened to some of the books they discussed. The main reason for the five stars is a response to the negative reviews. This is a free product! Why discourage them? Don't ruin it for those of us that value these podcasts.

Like um, you know, so, totally yeah, this is bad
This review is for all 3 episodes I've listened to so far. I will stick to the newsletters in the future. These podcasts are really badly presented. I lost track of how many times "like" "you know" "totally" "um" and "so" were used in place of expressive, intelligent language. Having read the newsletters, I expected more. These should have been good podcasts as the books highlighted are excellent reads. I listened to these podcasts to learn about the books I hadn't heard of before. But the lack of cogent discussion of the material and poor discussion ruined this.

Audicted is the worst
I tried listening to your reviews of books that you recommend. They are usually a load of crap. Just tell me the name of the book, the author, the narrator and generally what the story is about and then move onto the next book. Right now I am looking for a book that has a positive story or humor or something that can get me through the lockdown. I don’t get any of that from any of your reviews.

Great so far
I appreciated the insights and exposure to titles which were not on my radar. Even hearing about the titles I knew about put context to the hosts tastes. I look forward to more.
A few things I’d like to see.. when discussing a title, please state the title and author at the end of each discussion as well as the beginning so we don’t have rewind to get the details, Also, please make sure the titles are listed in the app and provide links for ease of use.

Glad to have this audible sci-fi Audicted, but this really is a podcast and I would much rather have an RSS feed and listen in my normal podcast app and be able to see the show notes and click on links to the books mentioned from the app. The Audible app and podcast are very sub-par.
