Publisher's summary

Some family secrets should go to the grave. In the tiny town of Milnor, North Dakota, Adam struggles to bring some measure of normalcy to his life, after a tragic event left him confined to a wheelchair, 21 years earlier.

His sister, Ada, fills his days with psychological torment and disappears for days at a time. Is it sibling rivalry, or something more sinister? A psychiatrist, in his relentless search for the truth, gets caught up in the unexpected. Splinter will keep you guessing right to the end!

Enjoyable mystery with messy performance

Splinter is an interesting mystery, although somewhat predictable for anyone familiar with the genre tropes. It tells the story of two orphans, Adam and Ada, and the relationship between them. The story itself is enjoyable, but nothing brilliant. The character Van (whom is actually the main character) is good, but the brother and sister (whom the mystery revolves around) is actually not that interesting.

Narration by JK Carpenter is a mixed bag.The main narration is generally good, but when Carpenter moved to doing voices there are issues. The narration becomes stilted due to trying to do individual voices, with the emotion and flow lost. The characters then come off as robotic or talking like William Shatner. There is also music and sound effects used sporadically through the book. There is no consistency to the use and I found it to be a major distraction from the story.

Twilight Zone

Michael Bussa wrote a story that pulled me in like an episode of the Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock. I loved the surprise ending this book had and the twists were well done. JK Carpenter fit the performance very well and added to the enjoyment with his various voices for different characters. I was not a fan of the wind chime sounds between chapters and found them to grate on me. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review.

Good read

Splinter was a good quick read by Michael Bussa. Adam was confined to a wheelchair after a tragic accident. His sister Ada torments his every day but isn't always around. Adam's psychiatrist tries to help Adam but it may cost him everything. I enjoyed this book and all of it's twists and turns.

Psycho/Mommy Dearest

I did enjoy this short listen that had a vibe of Mommy Dearest and Psych. I did wonder how Adam got out of hospital at the age of 7 and sharing the house with sister Ada at age of 21. Do recommend if you enjoy a short psychological horror. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you!

I'm lost for words...

This story feels like it has twists within twists. The characters are an odd bunch, all of them, not just Adam. Also no one seems to know what's going on, it's like everyone is groping along in the dark. Speaking of dark, the whole story as a sinister feel to it and I felt like I was just waiting for something to happen.

Very entertaining, I was captured from beginning to end.

The narration is good, the character voices are clear and recognizable, for me the delivery was a bit disjointed, the phrasing was just a bit off.

Splinter will get under your skin

What made the experience of listening to splinter the most enjoyable?

It is a good old fashioned creep-you-out kind of story. I think it's perfect for an audiobook.

What other book might you compare splinter to and why?

It sorry of has the vibe of Psycho

What does JK Carpenter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is compelling. It has that mysterious tone and delivery. I found myself listening to it while closing my eyes. I loved it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

For me it was the encounter with Dr. Bader and Dr. Vann in the small cafe. You just knew that something ill-fated was going to follow.

Any additional comments?

This short story is really, really good. The characters are believeable and it's keeps you guessing throughout. The narration is great!
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend this book to anyone who loves a creepy tale.

Not worth listening to

BOOK REVIEW.......
This story sucked. I didn't really get it. Was Aida and Adam the same person? Was it a split personality thing or just pretend? It needed clarity and depth to the story. I really did not like this story

NARRATOR REVIEW.....
The narrator was not all that great to listen to.
