mix of quirky and dark short stories

We have six short stories in an audiobook with a total duration of less than 1.5 hours. With little space to develop a complex plot or characters, the trick is to be concise yet give the readers a story worth remembering. For most of the stories in this collection, the reward (for me, anyway) came with the wrist-flick plot twist at the end. Indeed, I had to go back and re-listen to a few of them, so I could see again how the author managed it.

If I were to rank-order the stories based on my personal preference, it would be: Online Apocalypse, Journey Home, DuLacey Curse, George, Maniac Motorist, and Fight Night. (The Fight Night story didn't resonate at all with me -if there was a twist or irony at the end, I completely missed it.)

I enjoyed the narration, although I increased the playback speed to 1.2x since his pace at 1.0x was a wee bit plodding for my taste. (I appreciate that playback technology allows us to tinker with playback speeds - it's one of the greatest things about listening to audiobooks, compared to the good old days of listening to books on cassette!)

great British tones

The stories we're short and there was one about a fight which was not good at all. I liked the narrator who did a great job with average stories and helped to make them better than the sum of the writing, great British tones.

Good & weird short stories with a twist

Would you listen to Zombies, Ghosts, a Psycho and a Fight again? Why?

Yes, the plot twist factors won't be as good, but the stories are still entertaining.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite story would have to be, the online apocalypse.

Any additional comments?

All stories where entertaining, though the bar fight plot twist wasn't as pronounced. It was a good sampling of Paul S. Huggins' writing. The narration was also spot on.

A zombie walks into a bar during the apocalypse

I'm going to say that I listened to this, and then I went to do my review, and I saw a few people complaining about Druin's narration. I'm going to start off by saying I think the man did a fine job, he wasn't slow and never slurred, so I don't know where that came from, but he did have a pace and a cadence that he used to tell his tales. A good narrator has a distinctive voice, and you can pick them out in seconds if they are really good. I personally believe the man to have a solid voice that conveys a heck of a lot, so don't believe what they said. Listen to the sample. The man's got a great accent, and can sell what he says with a verbal wink and nod.

As for the stories, there are six. They each have a quality premise, and end with a slick surprise or twist. That is the kind of fine writing that I can appreciate. Nothing straightforward, nothing you see coming. A quick jab, a flsh of light, and you find yourself sitting on your rear end wondering where that came from. So, yeah, they were enjoyable. For a set of shorts it is a great deal to get for a short car ride or walk. While these didn't scare me, few stories ever have, they were enjoyable and that is all I can ask. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Makes me wish for Halloween all year

This is a neat little collection of half a dozen stories that put me in the mood for Halloween any time of the year, and since Halloween is my favorite holiday, that's a win right off the bat.

I listened to this book while doing dishes, grocery shopping, etc, and because the length was relatively short, it was fun to have the stories short enough to enjoy and then get right into the next one. Nothing too gross, either -- safe enough for teens for sure.

The narrator does an awesome job too. It can be a challenge with short stories because there isn't that much time to get to know the characters or setting, but he was engaging and kept things moving along. I like his reading style.

If you're seeking a book to take up a two hour road trip with a stop to grab a bite to eat, this is a perfect choice. It'll make that boring drive just fly before you know it! Recommended. I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Good Short Supernatural Stories

The stories, mostly supernatural, varied from fair to great. I think the one about a brief visit to Hell was the best.I thought the narrator did a very good job. His English accent was appropriate considering that the writer used British English, not American English.

Nice group of short stories

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

This is a collection of six horror short stories. They are pretty interesting and not very gory, which was a nice change. I don't want to give away too much about each one, so I'll keep this review a bit vague.

Each story is interesting and even though they're mostly short, they kept my interest enough to get through them. There were really fun twists in some of them and they were different enough that I didn't feel as if the author was repeating themselves. While this is a very short audiobook, it was a good length for a long car ride and I was able to hear most of the stories in one shot.

The narrator does a very good job too, keeping my interest engaged which could be hard considering just how short some of the stories are. Mr. Druin doesn't necessarily differentiate the voices much but it's enough that I wasn't lost on who was talking at least.

If you're looking for a quick listen to fill a small amount of time, this is a good choice. Scary enough to be fun without being gory and if you're really short on time, you can listen to just one or two stories and not worry that you're going to forget what happened by the time you get a chance to listen more.
