About this listen

Ever fantasized about quitting your job and starting over? Prioleau Alexander did just that. Here is his laugh-out-loud funny, endearing, and humbling exploration of life at minimum wage. Alexander walked away from a lucrative career as an advertising executive, seeking a life like that dude on Kung Fu.”

Over the next year, he worked minimum-wage jobs as a pizza deliveryman, ice cream scooper, construction worker, ER tech, fast food jockey, and even cowboy on a Montana dude ranch. He reveals a side of America that is rarely seen and questions the stale white-collar notions of a deeper, more meaningful life beyond the cubicle. In You Want Fries With That? Prioleau explores life at minimum wage and proves unequivocally that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Insightful and hilarious

I was continuously entertained throughout this book and the account of Prioleau’s adventures were so well written and laugh out loud funny that I could not wait to get in the car to hear more.

The authors sense of humor is so clever and biting that I will listen again before the summer —bravo and I will check out his other book with high expectations —

Read it —you will be glad you did —Bravo!

Fuzzies and Goo

I live in this working World despite my having a college education. so much of life is luck and chance and it doesn't take much to go down the economic ladder in this country. I think the author experience burnout in his professional career. I hope this is the first of many books that he has written. a book like this should be mandatory reading and listening in college campuses including the elite institutions of that train the leaders of our country and our world.

An inserting perspective

As a military guy myself and someone who had to spend time working at some of the described establishments, I found this book both entertaining and intriguing.
I noticed early on the political affiliation of the author is prominent throughout the book, I particularly enjoyed hearing French fries referred to as freedom fries. I thought that gem had all but been purged from the American lexicon.
Nevertheless, the author provides a unique perspective as someone who is a part of the upper middle class (a demographic that is often a key client at the jobs sampled). He accurately and hilariously recount some of the most infuriating parts of working in these jobs. I think my favorite part was the author's description of the type of customer that frequents ice cream parlors.
I think that despite the authors obvious conservative political tendencies, this book makes a great argument for the need for higher wages at some of the most famous lower paying jobs. Worth the read!

it was an interesting and funny look at life from a middle class man. In America there are alot of choices and thankfully we have alot of interesting people to write about it.

No Thank You, But I’ll Have Some Eye Contact and a Smile....

My goal was to kill some Covid time by listening while I plodded through my next household project. I soon realized that I was smiling and nodding, laughing, then shaking my head in sympathy and understanding. Without being preachy Alexander, a skilled storyteller, deftly had me walking in the shoes of the guy behind the counter, the fellow delivering the pizza, the “technician” changing and cleaning the bedpan, and so on. Last week the surgery center where I had my cataracts zapped temporarily misplaced my clothes containing my credit card, driver’s license, and cell phone. I don’t want to think about my likely reaction prior to reading“French Fries. ” I recognized the despair in the eyes of the nurse when she tried to apologize. Read this book: you’ll see PEOPLE rather than mere shadowy forms behind masks. (Plus Marantz is an excellent narrator)
