Publisher's summary

“Marjorie Liu is magic! Her writing is passionate, lyric, gritty, and riveting. She belongs high on everyone’s must-read list.” (Elizabeth Lowell)

“Anyone who loves my work should love hers.” (Christine Feehan)

A pyrokinetic former thief who fears the destructive power of flame at his fingertips.... A beautiful shape-shifter with fiery talents of her own hiding in the tunnels below Manhattan from those who destroyed her family and her race.... Put them together and you have Within the Flames, a powerfully sensual and totally gripping new Dirk & Steele romantic adventure from New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Marjorie M. Liu. One of the boldest, most exciting, and original voices in paranormal romance, Lui returns once more to the supernatural detective agency she made famous, a heroic covert organization that specializes in protecting extraordinary beings. This is strange excitement, a deeply emotional, brilliantly conceived and executed winner by an author on a par with Christine Feehan, Jeaniene Frost, and Nalini Singh. Within the Flames is a must-hear for paranormal aficionados.

Remember: “If you have yet to add Liu to your must-read list, you’re doing yourself a disservice.” (Booklist)

Warm Up

The story had a good plot. What ever became of lil Jimmy and his mother? Did the Lisa have Amy children if so how many and what powers did they have? A second book is need to answer all the questions I have about this.

Last book is a letdown

“A gargoyle, a dragon, and a room full of witches… what a perfect day!”
You’d think such a combination would be interesting and action packed, but you’d be wrong. I was really looking forward to Eddie’s HEA. Sadly, this was a bore, in large part because there’s hardly any interaction with Dirk and Steele. Other than some time with Gargoyle Len and Lethe, and then some time with Roland and Lung-Nyu, none of the other MCs comes into play.

With this as the last book in the series (at least on Audible), this is a very disappointing end.
Apparently, there never was an intended climactic battle between Dirk and Steele and the Consortium. Nor, apparently, did Dirk and Steele ever do much in the way of private investigating, rescuing, or executing missions. Thus, the urban fantasy and good vs evil intrigue never amounted to anything and these as merely paranormal romance books.

The romance here was underwhelming. Ironically, this book had the most sex scenes,
but also the most awkward and unromantic scenes. Maybe it was the complete lack of chemistry?

Surely, there’s more to the series, so I can get closure against the Consortium, see an Avengers Assemble moment when the MCs come together, and see Roland, Coney, and mayhap Serena get their HEAs?
