About this listen

Isabelle Scott and Mirabelle Monroe are still reeling from the revelation that they share more than just the roof over their heads. The media has pounced on their story and the girls are caught up in a flurry of talk-show appearances and newspaper interviews. They’ve put on a happy public face, but someone is leaking their true feelings to the press. While it seems like the world is watching their every move, at least they have each other.

But with cotillion season right around the corner, Izzie and Mira have barely had time to process their newfound sisterhood. Mira has always dreamed of making her debut in a gorgeous white gown - now if only she could find an escort. Izzie, meanwhile, is still struggling to find her place in Emerald Cove, and it’s seeming ever more impossible with EC mean-girls, young and old, doing their best to keep her down. As cotillion preparations heat up, though, there are dance steps to learn, manners to perfect - and secret initiations to complete. As if sophomore year wasn’t hard enough!

It’s time for the gowns to go on and the gloves to come off.

Jen Calonita certainly has the inside scoop on young Hollywood. A former senior entertainment editor at Teen People, she has interviewed everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Zac Efron. An entertainment journalist for the past ten years, she has written for TV Guide, Glamour, and Marie Claire. She lives in New York with her husband Mike, sons Tyler and Dylan, and their Chihuahua, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Brayden and Hayden

Not gonna like. Thought they were the same person until Mr and Mrs Townsend came around. I thought that Izzie and her step-bro were the ones getting together for a really long time. It seemed a little “Flowers in the Attic” but I mean, who am I to judge.
When I got that straightened out, I was able to root for them a little harder 😂😂😂

More of the same, if you like that sort of thing!

Winter White wasn’t bad…it was just more of the same.

It felt a little pointless to me. The Belles are still at odds, and still won’t work together. The family is still in turmoil and still can’t manage to get ahead of the agents working against them. There are still more social events that have to be shopped for and both Belles are still having problems finding that perfect dress.

Same old, same old.

I’m sure most readers who loved the first and love the rich girl drama genre will continue happily through Winter White and onto the third book.

But I need change, I need progress, I need some character arcs and some plot development.

I won’t be continuing on with the series but, as I said above, there is clearly an audience for this book and I wish them all the best.

Hooray for a series!

Shortly after listening to "Belles" and proclaiming that I would like for it to be the first in a series, I discover that it is! If you enjoyed Belles then I definitely recommend Winter White. Again Julia Whelan does a great job with the narration.

Enchanting setting and characters

I can’t get enough of this series! I am so glad the books are told from the perspectives of both sisters who are both so likable that they seriously play tug of war with my heart. One minute I’m on Izzy’s side and the next, Mira’s! I also find myself feeling bad for their parents at times. All of the characters are so well written and I absolutely adore the voice work. I immediately started the second book after completing the first one.

(Spoilers) I am smitten with Emerald Cove and it really gives me a modern day Great Gatsby vibe. There is a sprawling list of characters but I found them easy to follow and the voices for all are very distinguished. I am def not a girly girl and in no way traditional so I was on Izzy’s side about the Cotillion nonsense lol. But it was so beautiful how she chose to do it for Mira and her aunt and how much the experience did end up changing her.

The arrival of Dylan was unexpected but enjoyable. She blew in like the chaotic wind that she is. I love how Calonita expertly and seamlessly connects all the characters. It was so clever that Dylan is Braydon’s sister who hates Savannah and seemingly always has. Savannah caused so much trouble and drama in the first book that it was very satisfying to see some karma heaped on her lol.

I enjoyed the cotillion tasks and hazing more than I thought I would and found myself actually laughing out loud. This is def the funniest book out of the three which is impressive bc I often find that humor does not translate well into books. It provided nice comic relief to all the serious drama that was going on.

I could not believe that Jen Calonita actually pulled one over on me in this book. I did NOT see the twist coming at all about Calista and I can usually see groundwork from a mile away, twists rarely ever get passed me. I was able to retroactively see the hints though. I thought it was very well done and it highlights how women can be just as horrible and conniving as men, though often in different ways. Bill clearly thought he’d have better luck with sweet Calista after ditching creepy, aggressive Lucas but she was a snake in a different way.

And omg my heart nearly tore out of my chest when Mira accused Kellon of stealing and selling her painting! I realized it was Calista just as it dawned on the girls. I was suspicious of him as soon as he went into Mira’s room alone but that almost seemed too obvious to me. Still, I never suspected Calista! It’s such a shame too bc these poor girls already have trust issues and have already dealt with sooo many secrets and lies. But it only makes them stronger!

I was so glad that Kellon forgave Mira and that they ended up happy in the end. He serves an important role in her growth and I loved seeing her grow as a person and an artist as the story went on. I was so impressed with the painting she made of her looking into the window of the past, something that we all tend to do and some of us truly can’t pry ourselves away from the glass. I could totally understand how she was feeling and I could picture it perfectly in my mind.

My fav scene was when Mira stepped down as cochair of the butterflies and when both girls told the other what they respected/envied about the other. Together, they make the perfect team. The butterfly is also an apt name for the group bc they def go through quite the transformation!

I am glad things worked out well for Izzy and Brayden too and that Dylan came through for them in the end after all her meddling. She was almost as bad as Savannah at times which makes her a hypocrite! Calonita is excellent at writing flawed but beautiful characters who we can’t help forgiving in the end alongside the others.

Cute

Too much explaining but enjoyable. I still can’t believe this Julia Whelan voice. Her voice and her performance had really changed for good for sure.

Good, clean read that you won’t put down

I couldn’t stop reading, it was so good! I’m glad the author didn’t add any teen sexual material. Her plot, characters, and setting were all fantastic.
