Publisher's summary

What does an individual contribute to his or her own salvation? Does God wait on the doorsteps of our hearts, quietly hoping to be let in when we decide to open the door? Or does he call us and pursue us in a way we can't resist? The debate between the irresistible call of God and a human being's free will has raged for centuries. So what is the answer? And why does it matter?

In Willing to Believe, R. C. Sproul uncovers issues that provoked the Reformation and revived the controversy between Pelagius and Augustine. He carefully explores the relationship between original sin and human free will, clarifies misconceptions about the work of God in a believer's liberation from sin, illuminates the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation, and offers compelling reasons to believe the work of salvation is in God's hands.

Absolutely a must read

Very knowledgeable and thorough treatment by Sproul of true biblical justification, human will, and God’s sovereignty. Sproul magnificently brings to light the dire consequences of historical (and current!) misinterpretation.

The best in-depth study on free will I have heard.

Loved that Sproul leaves no stone unturned in dealing with this very controversial subject. Inspired my faith in God's Amazing Grace.

The connections of the different views.

Is sometimes hard to know if what is said is the viewpoint or is RC speaking again.

Golden

This clarion examination of the fallen human will as it relates to salvation is succinct, pastoral, and a much needed challenge to popular and pervasive views through the use of Scripture and historical Christian teaching.

Filled with information

My sister and I were raised Baptist. Indeed our father was a Baptist pastor. But while reading through the New Testament my sister discovered that predestination and election were actually biblical. A family discussion ensued. My mother asked, what about Free Will. That led to me purchasing this book. I learned how Free Will has been treated in the history of the church. I found that Jonathan Edwards gave the most cogent explanation of how Free Will works. I was able to answer my mother’s question about what happened to Free Will. Two Thumbs way up for this book.

My brain is bruised and inspired.

RC Sproul was an amazing theologian and expert teacher. The debate between Calvinism and Armenianism has raged for centuries and now I understand that better. It's also important that as an American I understand this because of the effects of each in the founding of America as the doctrines and theologies were still forming as Jamestown was just beginning to be successful. I highly recommend the book and I'll be rereading it a few more times for sure.
