An ENTHRALLING new novel from the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING author of Migrations and Once There Were Wolves

"A WILDLY TALENTED writer."―Emily St. John Mandel

A family on a remote island. A mysterious woman washed ashore. A rising storm on the horizon.

Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers, but with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Until, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman mysteriously washes ashore.

Isolation has taken its toll on the Salts, but as they nurse the woman, Rowan, back to strength, it begins to feel like she might just be what they need. Rowan, long accustomed to protecting herself, starts imagining a future where she could belong to someone again.

But Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realizes Dominic is keeping his own secrets. As the storms on Shearwater gather force, they all must decide if they can trust each other enough to protect the precious seeds in their care before it’s too late—and if they can finally put the tragedies of the past behind them to create something new, together.

A novel of breathtaking twists, dizzying beauty, and ferocious love, Wild Dark Shore is about the impossible choices we make to protect the people we love, even as the world around us disappears.

Critic reviews

A Most Anticipated Book (Goodreads, Publishers Weekly)

“[A] terrific thriller…McConaghy keeps readers guessing…McConaghy writes about both nature and human frailty with eloquent generosity. Readers won’t want to leave behind the imagined world of pain and beauty that McConaghy has conjured.”—Kirkus (starred review)

“Sub-Antarctic noir meets a love letter to the rapidly disappearing wild world in McConaghy’s latest…As lush as it is taut with tension, this novel is filled with both the joys and ravages of nature.”Library Journal (starred review)

“Urgent…McConaghy ratchets up the tension as the characters’ paranoia and mutual suspicion increases and their motives are revealed…McConaghy blends entertainment with a sobering message about conservation and the impacts of geographic isolation.”Publishers Weekly

Editorial Review

Sub-Antarctic noir meets a love letter to the natural world
Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of a remote island near Antarctica, home to the Shearwater research base and the world’s largest seed bank. Rising seas have been threatening the island, so the family must prepare to evacuate. When a woman named Rowan washes up on shore, the Salts take her in and nurse her back to health. As Rowan recovers, she gets to know the family: Raff, Dominic’s oldest son, is doing his best to channel his grief and rage from tragic heartbreak; Fen, his 17-year-old sister, is such a water creature that she lives among the seals; and Orly, the youngest boy, is consumed with love for the natural world. The storytelling moves through each character’s perspective, voiced by a stellar cast of narrators: Cooper Mortlock, Katherine Littrell, Saskia Maarleveld, and Steve West. It’s an immersive, moody listen that left me in tears in the best way possible. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

I love this author. Just as good as migrations.

has the flavor of sci fi apocalyptic story line but captures relationships between child-parent, lovers, soul mates, siblings, and most striking is the timeless connection and one-ness with the natural world. Captures both the terrifying ruthlessness and nurturing calm of oceans, storms, and whale pods.

A beautiful tale about loss and love and the fate of our planet

I loved this book so much, and loved the performance of each narrator!! They captured their character’s voices perfectly. Each character has such sadness, fear, pain, and hope. They were all able to grow and come out better on the other side. A great story and lesson on how to move thru grief, how not to lose the ones you love while going through it, and a strong cautionary tale of the fate of the planet. How will that end…can we save the things we need to survive, or are we doomed? Whatever the answer, this tale makes sure you know you have to LIVE your life with love surrounding you!

Outstanding!

Intelligent. Romantic. Heartwrenching. The writing style and the outstanding narration are a perfect blend. Together they create a painting with words. Based on real science that is affecting us this very minute, McConaghy has woven the lives of heroes into the lives of all living things.
