Not just for my Kids or my Youth

I absolutely love the prose of Jack London. I wonder exactly how many people have died, pulled North to the Wild by the romantic pen of Jack London. I finished a while back (Dietz's version) and was crying as I listened to it with my kids.

I've recently become interested in listening to several classics by different readers. London was one of the first I've done this with, but it worked well so he won't be the last.

John Lee gives a very solid reading of this classic. I think this is probably the superior audio of White Fang. While I like Dietz (and haven't done anything but sampled Thomley), Lee's reading is straight forward and easily managed at hyper-audio speeds (2.5x or faster). The only downside of a narration by Lee, is it is sort of like watching a movie with Kevin Bacon. They guy is everywhere and it is weird to hear his voice in so many places.

Appreciated the View Point Character

This novel was interesting since I had just finished listening to Ian Mortimer's Time Travelers Guide historical series. In those books, Mortimer dedicates a few passages to describing how animals were regarded in medieval England, Elizabethan England and the Restoration. In short - not well.

While I was listening to this Jack London tale about the life of a wolf/dog, I kept thinking how extraordinary it is that a few centuries later such a book was written with such empathy toward an animal, let alone a wolf. Perhaps London was using the character of White Fang as a lens through which we see how human beings act toward one another and other animals; perhaps our cruelty and dominance of nature is futile, unless we accept that we are, in fact, a part of it.

A true classic!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A beautifully written classic that shares the underlying thoughts and instincts that guide both man and beast. I quite often found myself talking to the wolf, cheering him on, and sighing with content as he finally found the love of his god/man. I only regret I waited so long to experience this beautiful tale!

A wolfdog's to survive both the wild and captivity

A classic story depicting one wolfdog's life in the Yukon during the gold rush years of the 1890's. From a young pup nearly dying of starvation, to being an outsider among dogs, to brutal handling and nearly death as a fight dog, to finally coming into the hands of one man who showed White Fang that though he has had a rough life both as a wild wolfdog and in the captivity of man, that life doesn't have to always be such a struggle to survive. White Fang finds a home.
This story is told from the viewpoint of the wolf and how he finds the will to survive countless trials. Shows just how cruel men can be towards dogs. In the end, you get the feels when you see him finally finding a home that he is safe and learns to trust and love his new "family".
The performance of the narrator, John Lee, was very enjoyable and well spoken.
Overall I enjoyed listening to the story which I had read in my early teens. A very thought-provoking story of man's relationship to animals.

FROM WILD TO TAME

Would you consider the audio edition of White Fang to be better than the print version?

In some ways. You can listen to an audio while working, driving etc and can't read during those times.

What other book might you compare White Fang to and why?

I suppose the other one I just listened to which was by Jack London, CALL OF THE WILD and they were both great, about animal, but opposite. One goes from wild to tame and the other goes from tame to wild.

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The different character voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me both cry and laugh, I think my fellow workers, wonder what I am listening to many times.
