About this listen

Dick Francis, the bestselling master of mystery and suspense, takes you into the thrilling world of horse racing. Sid Halley’s career as a jockey—and his marriage—were brought to a sudden end by a heartbreaking accident. His glory days are over, but now, as a private investigator, he still finds a certain satisfaction in successfully solving a case. His latest one, though, could prove to be his undoing.

Rosemary Casper, wife of an elite racehorse trainer, has begged for his help in figuring out why her husband’s most promising horses have been performing so poorly. Halley thinks she’s overreacting at first. Then hints of deceit and brutal danger make him think twice…

another great Dick Francis resd

The second novel in the Sid Halley storyline, this picks up smoothly from where 'Odds Against' finished. I like the Sid Halley character/storyline and very much enjoyed the narration by Simon Preeble.

The best writer!

Sid Halley is the favorite character in this house. I have read all of Mr. Francis' books, and there is not one that disappoints, but Sid stands out .

Fantastic story and reader

Dick Francis'books have held up for me over the years. I read them long ago and I am enjoying listening to them again. Sid Halley is the best character and the only one, I believe, to have more than one book. This book was so good, Sid Halley is the quintessential Dick Francis hero and you couldn't ask for a better reader than Simon Prebble.

A "page-turner"

I couldn't stop listening to this thoroughly engaging story featuring former jockey, Sid Halley. I get a little tired of his adversaries underestimating Sid, and his embittered ex-wife's stupidity. But, I couldn't stop listening and enjoying this fascinating character and his action-filled adventures.

Wondering where the diamonds were and if they could be found.

I liked the twists and turns, great plot. Ended well, good info on gemology without being boring

I have only one quibble about the performance of t

As usual, Dick Francis tells a great story. Simon Preble does a great job of narrating. My only complaint is the pronunciation of Sid's last name. He was not named after the famous object that appears in the sky at rare intervals. His name is pronounced like the fictional Prince Hal's first name followed by the e sound. It has been pronounced this way in all the other books I have listened to that featured Sid and his detecting skills.

Dick Francis is always excellent

I read most of Dick Francis’s books in the 1990’s and loved them. I’ve just now started listening to them and they are as good-or better- the second time around! You don’t have to be a horse lover to love his books- but it does make it great for those of us who do live and love horses.
