About this listen

Deeply touching and uplifting, What You See When You Can't See offers a way of looking at the world through different eyes and a road map to finding bliss in the simplest of things.

Zena was born with Marfan Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder which affects the heart, eyes, lungs, blood vessels, joints, bones, and bodily systems. Concretely, it meant she is nearly completely blind, yet she kept this condition hidden from the world for four decades - until she met Munch.

A guide dog with a huge personality, Munch made Zena's invisible disability suddenly plain for all the world to see. This book shares the story of Zena's journey with Munch, who helped her not only come to terms with her disability but gave her the strength to find her place in the world and help others understand that, like her, they could see the beauty in living a different kind of life. Zena also shares her unique model to reset negative thought patterns.

Critic reviews

"Right from the first few pages, I knew that this book would go on a list of my favourite books. It's deeply inspiring, thoroughly insightful and really makes you think about how you look at the world." (David Hamilton, PhD)

A great book to help you get out

This is a great book to help you get out of yourself! I listened to this book from beginning to end in one day because I enjoyed it! Here is someone who hides their disability from the world. While doing this she did a lot of silly things which would have destroyed most people because it would have been embarrassing! The author recounts many stories about these acts throughout the book! This book is not what you think, which is about another blind woman. It’s about a woman who lived an incredible life and then wrote about it to help the rest of the world. When they finally admitted they needed help they found a dog named Munch who changed her life. Together they found their way never giving up on what they truly wanted to do in life!
The author went on to have children. She could write another book just on that alone! That would probably make a really good book!
I get from this book that I'm not living the life I could be living when compared to this author in hiding instead of stepping out there and living life. This is probably why I've read two books about blind women. I really need to get off my rear-end and do what I'm here to do in this lifetime.
I encourage people to read this book because it will make you find your voice and your life purpose!
