One of the first books I listened to on Audible was Joe Mavarro and Marvin Karlins' "What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People" (2012). It was so long ago that I hadn't started writing reviews, but that was fortunate with this book. I've been using some of the techniques described in the book for 18 months, and they work. I wouldn't have known that when I finished the book.

I am a civil trial attorney, and I long relied on gut feeling and intuition when I picked a jury. In other words, just dumb look. This book gave me the ability to know, with some basis, whether a jury liked my client or the opposition, and whether I was effectively advocating my client's defense. Once, in a memory seared sharp, I completely torqued a juror off, which I realized by her flared nostrils and lips pursed together to nonexistence. I was able to dig out of that situation.

This isn't the key to picking a perfect jury, but it helps. It's like knowing a secret code.

I occasionally listen to the book to refresh my techniques. The book teaches how to speed read people, but learning the techniques takes a lot of time, patience, practice and feedback - when you can get it.

I'm giving the book an overall 4 because it is so useful, but it's a 3 on the story. Despite the exciting topic, it's pretty dry and academic. The narration is a three, too. It sounds more like a business seminar than a narration.

I want to mention that "What Every Body is Saying" and Pamela Meyer's "Liespotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception" (2011) really builds on Navarro's techniques. Listen to them consecutively, and it's like a college psychology course.

Would you consider the audio edition of What Every BODY Is Saying to be better than the print version?

No. They are essentially the same.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator had a good serious tone that was appropriate to the content. However, it was much too obvious that he was reading and thus it was quite monotone.

Great text.

I recommend this book for anyone who engages in interpersonal relationships both on a personal and professional level. It helps to bring some key insights into the human Dynamic and both taking some of the guesswork out of that Dynamic and clarifying potential reasons to explore it even further.

I definitely recommend this book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I was curious to learn something new about perceiving the people around me by their body movements. This books is mostly about how to tell if someone is lying, but there is a lot of other behavior I was curious about that this book didn't cover. I felt overall the book was superficial.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More about how to perceive a larger range of behaviors.

Fairly superficial mostly about lying

Fascinating. If you want to learn the signs to read what people are saying with their body. From feet to head. I truly loved it

Fascinating a book you must listen

Would you listen to What Every BODY Is Saying again? Why?

I will listen to it again, because one listening is not enough to absorb all the tips it has on how to get and interpret cues on what people are feeling.

What other book might you compare What Every BODY Is Saying to and why?

The power of body language, because they talk about the same subject.

What about Paul Costanzo’s performance did you like?

I can understand him even at thrice the speed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved his chapter on how hard it is to detect deception, and cautioning listeners about the dangers and abuse that can result.

Any additional comments?

Before getting it, I read reviews complaining about two issues:
a) The need to check a PDF. I found this to be a good thing. This way I don't have to imagine everything. I printed it on two pages per sheet, both sides, and got an 8-sheet booklet, very practical.
b) The narrative being dull. I listened to it at thrice the speed, and was interesting. At normal speed it may result too slow. Fortunately, the audible app has that speed setting.

Very informative.

This is a very interesting and very informative book. I would advise you to buy a kindle or paper version of the book due to what I have to mention next

Sadly Audible wouldn't provide the PDF that should follow with the book so one will miss out on some points if this is the first time you look into body language

Audible has a lack of service especially for folks outside the USA. Hope they soon realize the world is larger than just USA and begin giving good customer service to foreigners as well. I guess our money is as good as those you receive from the US customers

But all in all a great book that I would highly recommend people to read. Sad one has to complain about audible in a good review

Great and very interesting book

This book was very eye opening and now has me watching people at all times to try and spot the distinct tells and behaviors mentioned in the book. The narrator won't be for everyone and I kept getting the infomercial or car salesman vibe while listening, but the information was worth powering through that. In all, anyone that interacts with others on a daily basis or as a critical part of their job should give this a listen.

Make sure you pull down the PDF ahead of time so you can reference it as there are over 80 diagrams mentioned in the book.

Great information!

What made the experience of listening to What Every BODY Is Saying the most enjoyable?

The ability to put the lessons from the audiobook straight into action in everyday life. Reading people really helps in my work and I was able to get measurable results immediately.

What other book might you compare What Every BODY Is Saying to and why?

I cant compare it as I haven't listened to anything like this one. This type of subject matter doesnt usually appeal to me.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Costanzo?

Anyone else. His reading is like a news reader with random pauses and slow pace that makes it hard to decipher whether he is on the same sentence or has started a new one. His monotone frustrated me thoughout the book.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from What Every BODY Is Saying?

I will be able to decipher body language and detect a greater insight into peoples true feelings in certain situations.

Great info that you can put straight into practice

I had such a hard time listening/concentrating due to the whistling S's of the reader!

Amazing Book but...
