About this listen

In the wake of the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, the survivors of the Salamanders Legion searched long and hard for their fallen primarch, but to no avail. Little did they know that while Vulkan might have wished himself dead, he lives still...languishing in a hidden cell for the entertainment of a cruel gaoler, his brother Konrad Curze.

Enduring a series of hellish tortures designed to break his body and spirit, Vulkan witnesses the depths of the Night Haunter's depravity but also discovers something else - a revelation that could change the course of the entire war.

Intertwined story

Many seem to dislike the multiple stories, but they are all connected and make for a great overall story with a hint of mystery. The narrator's voices for characters tend to sound the same, and he has difficulty switching between two characters quickly. Overall, it's a great story and the descriptions of Vulkan going HAM are worth it alone.

Enthralling

Very good story! No holds barred on Vulkan's Torture. His Circumstances become more and more bleak and his Fatalities become more and more gruesome. Vulkan's Pain is unmatched. I will listen to this multiple times.

Great Story. Not Sure What Other People Read

I see some people trashing it or saying confusing. I don't get it. Yes there are multiple stories. But, not to the point where it's confusing. This was such a great story. I liked the view of Vulkan. All the stories were well written. This has actually been one of my favorites.

A good story

The story itself was really good. I think the trouble some of these stories are running into is the comparisons to previous stories, and ultimately I don’t feel the need to hear about Isstvan anymore.

Great Story

i understand where some people would be confused as it changes threads fairly abruptly. there are really four you need to know: Salamanders at Istvaan 5, Word Bearers at Trios, Salamanders at Trios, and Vulkan in prison. if you keep that in mind, it's easier to follow and everything else is very well done

Skippable, but worth reading if bored

Nick Kyme ultimately succeeds in writing a book that fits the Warhammer universe. It is however frequently a slog and does a middling job of representing both Primarchs and their Astartes. The characters here are not without redeeming and compelling features, and the plot is not without some gravitas and symbolism, but the epic scale is missing and the book doesn't do justice to the Salamanders or Night Lords in the way I was hoping it would. Performance is up to par with the standard required for a Horus Heresy audiobook but no better than that.

I'm grateful for having the additional background and info on Vulcan and Curze but also grateful to have the book finished.

better than the reviews

I enjoyed this book a fair bit. it wasn't hard to follow but the narrator wasn't the best couldn't do enough voices I think. not the strongest of the series but a good read of you like salamanders.
