Publisher's summary
Francis Pettigrew travels to Exmoor for a holiday with his wife - an area in which as a young boy he was traumatized by coming across a dead body on the moor. In an attempt to exorcise this trauma, Pettigrew walks across the moor to the place where the incident occurred - only to find another dead body. Moreover, when he returns to the scene with the police, the body is gone. Did he really see a body, or is it a hallucination conjured up by his return to the scene of the crime that has haunted him since childhood? In Untimely Death, Cyril Hare conjures up an intriguing puzzle whose twists and turns will keep listeners on the edge of their seats until the final surprising resolution.

All is set for a lovely Christmas, with friends and family gathered round the fire, except as the bells chime midnight, a murder is committed. But who is responsible? The scorned young lover? The lord's passed-over cousin? The social-climbing politician's wife? The Czech history professor? The obsequious butler? And perhaps the real question is: Can they survive long enough to find out?

Mr. Richard Dodsley, owner of a fine second-hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road, has been found murdered in the cold hours of the morning. Shot in his own office, few clues remain besides three cigarette ends, two spent matches and a few books on the shelves which have been rearranged. In an investigation spanning the second-hand bookshops of London and the Houses of Parliament - since an MP's new crime novel Death at the Desk appears to have some bearing on the case - John Ferguson's series sleuth MacNab is at hand to assist Scotland Yard in an atmospheric fair-play bibliomystery.

But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Story
Tess Strebel can’t recognize her own face. She can’t recognize her home. Her bedroom is unfamiliar. And she can’t remember the handsome stranger lying next to her in bed. A stranger who claims he’s her husband. Tess reads a letter in her own handwriting, composed during a rare lucid day, explaining her life as it now exists: she was in a terrible car accident one year ago. Every morning, she wakes up unable to remember most of the last decade. Including her own wedding.

Great little English mystery
I’m really enjoying this author, his mysteries are engaging but not overly complicated. Can’t wait to read my next one.

Be Patient, it’s Worth It
I’ve never listened to a mystery that was constructed quite like this one. Francis Pettigrew is now retired. The policeman – someone he has known in previous books – is now retired, too. As the story opens, Pettigrew and his wife are on vacation. The actual detection work doesn’t even get started until the final few chapters – and it’s largely done by other characters. But give it time. Let it unfold. You won’t be disappointed.
I start every Chris MacDonnell recording kinda-sorta wishing it was someone else at the mic. But after a couple of chapters that feeling evaporates.

Untimely death
This is the 3rd book of Cyril hare that I have listened to. I’m only saddened to learn there aren’t any more.. I hope Audible will or Tantel will find it worth while to produce more books and engage Chris Macdonnell as the narrator…he is-superb.
