Publisher's summary

Fans of Lisa Unger and Allen Eskens won’t want to miss this thrilling new suspense novel from the #1 internationally bestselling author of The Girl Who Was Taken! Hiding her own dark past in plain sight, a TV reporter is determined to uncover the truth behind a gruesome murder decades after the investigation was abandoned. But TWENTY YEARS LATER, to understand the present, you need to listen to the past…

Avery Mason, host of American Events, knows the subjects that grab a TV audience’s attention. Her latest story - a murder mystery laced with kinky sex, tragedy, and betrayal - is guaranteed to be ratings gold. New DNA technology has allowed the New York medical examiner’s office to make its first successful identification of a 9/11 victim in years. The twist: the victim, Victoria Ford, had been accused of the gruesome murder of her married lover. In a chilling last phone call to her sister, Victoria begged her to prove her innocence.

Emma Kind has waited twenty years to put her sister to rest, but closure won’t be complete until she can clear Victoria’s name. Alone she’s had no luck, but she’s convinced that Avery’s connections and fame will help. Avery, hoping to negotiate a more lucrative network contract, goes into investigative overdrive. Victoria had been having an affair with a successful novelist, found hanging from the balcony of his Catskills mansion. The rope, the bedroom, and the entire crime scene was covered in Victoria’s DNA.

But the twisted puzzle of Victoria’s private life is just the beginning. And what Avery doesn't realize is that there are other players in the game who are interested in Avery’s own secret past—one she has kept hidden from both the network executives and her television audience. A secret she thought was dead and buried...

Accused of a brutal murder, Victoria Ford made a final chilling call from the North Tower on the morning of 9/11.

Twenty years ago, no one listened.

Today, you will.

TWENTY YEARS LATER, to understand the present, you need to listen to the past...

So Much Potential But Really Missed The Mark

I have listened to other Charlie Donlea books and enjoyed them. This book had all the right elements but didn’t quite get there for me. There was too much going on, too many plot points and no character development. While I will say this did keep me engaged at the beginning, the ending was super far fetched and disappointing. There was also tons of unnecessary filler, fluff chapters and story lines that could have been eliminated. As a result, none of the plot twists were all that surprising. I don't want to spoil anything but the murder that was meant to be the main plot of the story in the end went no where. An 11 hour book with everyone one of the many plots all sorted in the last 30 minutes - WFT

Vivienne Leheny was good with the the delivery of the story and the only reason I finished the book

Check out single barrel rum

I got this book on sale from the monthly selections. Per Shellys reviews and recommendations of this author, I now have three of his books. I love his endings!!! those empty eyes was an oh my goodness moment at the epilogue, which keeps on resonating when I think of this author’s books. This is a new narrator for me, and she is growing on me. I can only hope she does more mysteries. This book did not have the pace of those empty eyes, but it still was a very entertaining story.
Some of the other books are narrated by a reader that has a high pitch voice, which I do not care for, so unless on sale I won’t be venturing onto that narrator.
Where my comments of help?

Unexpected delight

Got this as a daily deal but would have gladly paid a full credit. Im not big on writing reviews but felt the need to note a few things. First introduction to this author. At different times she had me , excited, flabbergasted, irritated, shocked and bewildered. Just when you think she will leave you hanging, she creatively stitches things together. There are some naive moments when you can’t believe this brilliant minded journalist has to have a clue that the FBI is still watching. I mean shes a journalist for goodness sake. That’s probably the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way. Other than i loved the story, characters and narration.

Twists and turns

When this book first started, it jumped back and forth in time and characters and kept confusing me. I found myself rewinding it often. I got frustrated and almost quit. I'm glad I kept going! When the puzzle pieces fell into place, it all clicked and I was following the story. The twists kept me going to the end and the big twist at the end that I never saw coming blew me away!

Convoluted

Why didn't Claire Montgomery / Avery Mason's lover Walt get into trouble for boycotting his FBI assignment?

Slow start - but ending twist

It started out slow for me, by chapter 40 something I stated to get into more; And the ending wasn’t at all what I expected.

Amazing ending

If you’re confused by the first 2 chapters, stick with it! At first there were a lot of characters and I was a little confused. But once I wrote down their names and a little info on each I couldn’t get enough. Multiple stories going on but they wrapped them all up and the ending? AMAZING!

Kept me guessing

This book kept me interested the entire time. When I thought I knew what happened new twists came. Also appreciated that it stated the date, thought the different time lines might get confusing while listening. It was very clear. Highly recommend.

Twenty Years Later

The later part of the book was very good with several excellent plot twists. However the first two-thirds of the book was unnecessarily long with too much tedious detail. The book could easily have been 2 hours shorter without taking anything away from the otherwise clever plot.
