About this listen
Have you ever noticed that things aren't always what they seem? Life will always throw you a curved ball when you least expect it. We see only what we expect to see, and sometimes we could be in for a big surprise. And I sure got a surprise I can tell you, in spades. A surprise that lead to blackmail and murder. That's when I really got...Trouble in Mind.

Story
Across the bottom of the screen the ticker tape announced in large black letters 'Governor Reynolds Murdered'. Apparently his body had been discovered earlier that morning, lying in his garage. He had been shot twice. One shot to the upper chest, the other hitting his shoulder. 'Police believe that the weapon used was a 38 revolver,' the reporter said. Kendall froze. Anthony Shaw had also been killed by a 38 calibre bullet. Kendall was not quite sure of what it all meant. What connection was there between Anthony Shaw, and the State Governor, and the business mogul, Ian Duncan. And what about Senator Mackenzie? Where did he fit in? And who or what was Latimer?

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Entertaining
Fun, quick listen. I liked the Film Noir style set in the present day. The narrator had a perfect dry, deadpan style for the private detective telling the story.

Greed trumps again!
All the twists and turns held my attention to the end!
John Holt weaves a tale to keep Jack Daniels on the trail of blackmail and murder.
Peter Borys was a great narrator bringing the characters to life.

It felt like I was there with Daniels in the story
Short, twisty turny mystery that made my afternoon. The snarky noir feel made this modern story enjoyable, even for someone who doesn’t often listen to mysteries. I’ll happily be listening to the others in the series.

Not Just Whodunit but Who Is It?
So his client offers him a substantial payoff to dig a little dirt on her husband. He provides but she stiffs him. (He's never heard of a retainer?) Shrugging his shoulders he opens the paper to find her picture--attached to another name. Plus she's a corpse. Our P.I. is firmly molded in the noir conceit and plays his hard-boiled game to the . . . interesting . . . conclusion. I listened to narrator Peter Borys who gave a nice edge to the vocalizations.

old fashion detective story
Again John Holt writes another good old fashion detective story. Trouble in mine brings to live detective Jack Daniels. I really like his character. A short story with good characters and a good story line.
There is no corse Language in it, or sex scenes. Although there is some violence it does not go into great details.
Narrator Peter Borys does a good job tell the story. The story is told in the first person. Borys gives each character alive with their own individual voices.

Great Gum Shoe!
I wasn't sure how I would like the slower paced gum shoe Private Eye but I have discovered that I love him. I tend to read higher octane fast paced books but Jack Daniels has found a place in my heart as a great storylines with a slower enjoyable pace that sets it apart. Kind of like a smooth Bourbon!
This is the first time I have heard a story narrated by Peter Borys and he has done an awesome job with Jack! I think John Holt had a trial and error while he found the right fit for Jack and Peter has stepped up to the plate and hit a homer.
I have loved it!! A great smooth story to change up your pace with plenty of intrigue to keep you hooked.

Looking for a fun couple of hours? Here it is!
A quick listen, this is just the book for you. Not original with the plot, but I found the story to be a very fun, enjoyable story. Jack Daniels gets himself involved in a case that includes blackmail and murder. And while we have seen the story lines before, the way it is presented, in a first person, quirky and good-humored kind of way made this an easy story. The narration was key to this story, and Peter Borys performed the characters excellently. He gave each person their own identity in a slightly over the top expression, perfect for this book. I really enjoyed this quick listen.
