About this listen

For plain and pure imaginative delight, Treasure Island is unsurpassed. From the moment narrator Jim Hawkins meets the blind pirate Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the spirited battle for hidden treasure on a tropic island, the novel spawns unforgettable scenes and characters that have thrilled readers young and old since its original publication in 1883. A story that centers around the battle between good and evil, Treasure Island is, in the words of G.K. Chesterton, "the realizaton of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas."(P)1997 Blackstone Audiobooks Action & Adventure Classics Fiction Literature & Fiction Adventure Treasure Island Pirate

Critic reviews

"Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Island has enthralled (and caused slight sea-sickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic." (Amazon.com)

Frederick Davidson's narration of this story is excellent! A bad narrator can ruin what you know is a good story. His different voices for the different characters really makes it great to listen to. R.L. Stevenson is one of my favorite authors. It's always amazed me how authors can put the words together in a way to bring their writing to life. I wish I had the gift they have. Troy J. One of the best pirate stories ever.

I think I’ve determined that Stevenson’s works are just not for me. I hate all this sailing and pirates stuff. That being said, the narrator was excellent! If you like seafaring pirate books check this out.

Performance was great; story sort of boring

This book recalled my boyhood fantasies of sailing the ocean with adventures in my heart. I listened to it in order to determine if it’s appropriate to read to my children. While I should probably wait another year or two I’m tempted to read it to them anyway so I can watch their imagination run and enjoy playing pirates in search of buried treasure with them. It’s a great story and a classic. Like many readers it took a chapter or two to get used to his different voices and accents but I was soon immersed in the story, paying no attention to my first misgivings of his accents. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Delightful

Do not both with the other versions with more famous readers as they are often not the true story, for the unabridged edition, this is your audiobook.

Unabridged and Worth the Read

The clarity and vigor of RLS are undiminished even after almost 150 years.

A fine dramatic reading w many voices. My only quibble is the voice of Jim Hawkins, the boy. Mismatched. For a clever and resourceful lad, this voicing is of an ingenue. (Granted it might simply be physically impossible for a grown man to sound like a boy.) Still 5 stars.

RLS intended this as a boy’s adventure for young readers — tho adults will like it too. For adult themes in similar settings of ships and islands, see RLS, The Ebb Tide.

Vivid writing, fine performance

This timeless classic does not disappoint. The narration is superb. Long John Silver is the father of all villans and this adventure is the mother of all adventure stories of treasure and treachery.

Exciting classic

I loved this story when I was younger. But listening 30+ years later, it’s even better!

Better then I remembered!
