Story
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Go Behind the Scenes of Treasure Island
Our favorite moments from Treasure Island
About the Creator
Robert Louis Stevenson was born November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson was sickly as a child, making school attendance difficult. When not being tutored at home, he spent his time reading and writing stories. While at Edinburgh University, he rejected his father’s wish that he become an engineer, declared himself an atheist, began wearing bohemian clothing, and embarked upon a writing career. As a poet and novelist, he achieved fame for stories that have delighted fans for over a century in print, on the stage, and in film. In audio, he is best known for the highly acclaimed and full-cast recordings of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and also for the popularity of Kidnapped, Black Arrow, and South Sea Tales. He died December 3, 1894 in Vailima, Samoa.

Story
In this Audible Exclusive performance by Matt Lucas of Great Expectations, Charles Dickens demonstrates that conscience, loyalty and empathy are virtues far more valuable than intellect, wealth and social standing. First published in Dickens’ own periodical, All the Year Round, the novel was divided into nine monthly instalments, from December 1860 to August 1861. Unsurprisingly, it was an instant success and managed to sell over 100,000 copies per week. Though written at a challenging time in Dickens’ life, when the impending breakdown of his marriage loomed over him, Great Expectations proves to be one of his most optimistic, comical and romantic novels.

Superb!
I was leery of a performed interpretation. Others I've heard in the past were hokey. This was fantastic! Thoroughly enjoyed it in every way. I can't say enough positive about this. The only tiny reservation: some of the accents were so authentic that it was difficult to make out certain words, or the occasional sentence. But don't let that stop you. This is a first rate production. Bravo Audible! I hope this inspires Audible to bring other classic novels to life. We would love to hear Moby Dick next…

Lots of heavy breathing and characters yelling over each other
I realllly wanted to like this book, but overall it was a let down. The story was so slow and very little happened for such a long book. The characters voices were great, however there was lots of fighting and thus heavy breathing and yelling which made it difficult to understand what they were saying at times.

An Audio Masterpiece
I got this book either for free or part of a daily deal and now that I've heard it, I would have paid full price. I thought that this would be more of a "multi-cast recording" with narration and different people doing the various characters. I would have enjoyed more of a narrative but this was still phenomenal!

Good portrayal
Often I have trouble with "the classics" because of the old time writing style not always matching up with my modern day brain. That was not as noticeable here, since the audio drama was well performed. Background sounds were well done and this will remind the listener of the old radio dramas, with much better sound quality.

The overall performance of this classic story is captivating and brings all the characters to life. It remains sensitive to the subtleties of the story such as true wealth and character, while entertaining the reader with a swashbuckling tale. All evidences as to why this story has remained a staple in classic literature.
