About this listen
He may be clever, but she's already a step ahead...
Kalia Salam is a Voyant, or a person with the ability to create mind-altering visions and project them into others. But when the punishment for having that ability is death, every decision becomes a strategic calculation to avoid execution. Unfortunately, that includes tethering herself to the continent's most wealthy brothel owner and only using her magic to pad the madam's pockets. That is, at least, until she needs it to protect those around her. But when Kalia uses her magic on the wrong client and is mistaken for a powerful djinn, one that the pirates have been meticulously hunting, she becomes ensnared in her most complex game of deception yet. Because, one way or another, she refuses to fall to the hands of a cursed captain.
Captain Rahmi Abada revels in collecting dying souls from the sea, particularly those burdened by guilt. But whispers of a tale have begun to swirl...a tale about a mysterious gemstone with innumerable abilities, including the power to shatter any magical bond. Consumed with the idea of sailing for eternity without his binding curse to Liddros, God of Sea, Rahmi enlists the help of the fiery djinn he forced aboard his ship. The only problem? The djinn harbors her own secrets, ones that threaten to unravel Rahmi's carefully laid plans.
Drawing inspiration from The Legend of the Flying Dutchman and the enchanting world of Aladdin, The Voyant and the Mark of Malice weaves a captivating story of hidden dangers, action-packed adventures, and the unexpected, yet sizzling romance of two sworn enemies who are determined to outwit one another.

Story
Fenna Terrigan never expected to leave her seaside village. She was too quiet, too gentle, and far too kind to take on life outside of the bookshop she works at. But when her brother shows up on her doorstep begging for aid with a pirate captain hot on his tail, Fenna will do anything to protect him. Devlin Cato is the captain of a cursed ship and can step foot on land for one day every seven years. Once again, he’s found himself using it to chase a deserter across the continent. His hunt is short-lived when Fenna agrees to take on her brother’s twenty-five-year debt.

Story
Walking home late one night, burned-out barista Nell accidentally incinerates someone. Whoopsie! Now, if this tale began in a fantastic far-away land, or Nell was, perhaps, a wizard, such a mishap might make some kind of sense. But this is not a wondrous fantasy world. This is real life, and Nell just wanted to go home and eat macaroni. As Nell stares at the smoldering corpse, she realizes something with horrifying certainty: She's magic. And not the cute pulling-a-rabbit-from-a-hat kind of magic.

Story
I was taken, kidnapped by traffickers, and sold like cattle at a market. All for a magic that runs deep through my family's bloodline. Now Lord Eldrion claims me as his own. Cold and cruel he parades me around as a Lady of not only the citadel but his lands, all while refusing to look me in the eyes when he addresses me. This life is worse than death, where others would embrace the luxury I see it as nothing more than a gilded cage. But there is one person who sees me, who dares to defy Lord Eldrion. He too is a prisoner here, trained and forced to entertain visitors at the citadel.

Story
Our retro-tech towns might seem idyllic, yet go beyond the arcades and coffee shops and you'll reach the danger zones roamed by bionic bots. Me? I ran a video store with my cute friend Emiko. She's always been a little different, so I had to look out for her—we usually just watched movies and played games together. One day, a suspicious pink-haired chick burst into the store, warning me not to watch a tape labeled Property of Steelheart—Do Not Watch! So obviously, I did, and a terrifying ghost crawled out of the screen.

Ok
It was ok up until that very eye rolling end. It was a bit cringy. Like the author grew up on too many Disney movies with the whole “with our power of love and friendship we can defeat anything!”.

entertaining
A unique storyline with enough borrowed elements that you understand the references, but those elements are taken in a wildly different direction from their inspiration.
There were enough typos & mis-speaks throughout the audio and ebook versions that I'm glad I had both to reference in several places.

A True Enemies to Lovers Adventure
Rahmi and Kalia were TRUE enemies to lovers. I lost track of the amount of times that Kalia tried to kill him, and I loved her fiery spitball personality. She took absolutely zero crap from anyone and was completely unapologetic about it. The banter was top notch. I loved it. I was literally laughing out loud while listening to the book.
The narrator, Broghanne Jessamine does a fantastic job pulling you into the story and getting you to love the characters. I fully enjoyed listening to the book even as a a second read for me. It's a brilliant mix of pirates and magic and gives you all the Disney vibes with a much more adult storyline.

Such a fun pirate Romantasy!
The magic system in this series is so fun. I also love how it could be a standalone. The first book would be helpful for a few pieces, but is not necessary. The narration/narrator was perfect for this book.

After being mistaken for a mysterious djinn, Kalia is captured by The Mark of the Malice crew and forced to embark on the perilous journey in search of this dangerous treasure. A battle of wits and survival ensues. Will they both emerge unscathed? See my full book review on Goodreads and Amazon 💻

🌶️: moderate
The narrator does a phenomenal job embodying Kalia’s fighting spirit and her chemistry with the brooding and morally grey Captain Rahmi. The banter had me cackling and I enjoyed every moment on this voyage.
Both are broken and hiding parts of themselves from the world. Can the fragile thread of trust and mutual attraction between them turn into something more? Can Rahmi end his curse at last?
The Voyant and The Mark of Malice is a swashbuckling adventure that gives Pirates of the Caribbean meets Aladdin vibes with a dark and spicy twist.

Dark, pirate romantasy
I enjoyed this audiobook a lot! The narrator is fantastic. I love her accent because it pulls me straight into the fantasy world- it is just so fitting for the story.
This story has lots of great themes like personal growth, developing friendships, found family, high seas adventure, and romantasy. I
