About this listen

Play for a husband. Don't fall for his enemies...

As the second-born princess of a kingdom conquered by a brutal empire, I'm nothing but a pawn. Little do I expect my parents to arrange my marriage to the most powerful bachelor of all: the son of the emperor himself.

But when I arrive at the imperial palace, I discover I must compete for my betrothed—vying with the court noblewomen in a series of humiliating trials to prove our devotion.

Those who fail will be executed.

For the sake of my country, I'll risk my life to win my husband—this sadistic man who applauds the torment and flaunts his lovers.

Unfortunately, my scheming competitors aren't my only enemies. The emperor's royal wards—princes of other conquered domains, held hostage to ensure their families' obedience—lurk in the shadows.

They see me as a traitor, prostrating myself for our tyrants' approval. The perfect target for their bottled rage. They'll do whatever they can to distract me, unsettle me... ruin me.

Forbidden as they are, I can't help being drawn in by their seductive wiles. Behind their simmering fury, their pain and broken hopes call to me.

They might be just the allies I need to save my life and my kingdom. But only if I can conquer these wicked men before I lose my heart.

*A Game of Veils is the first in a new fantasy romance series with a sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance, smoldering morally grey men, and a determined heroine they'll regret underestimating.*

Wow!

This novel was interesting and intriguing. I love the cliffhanger and at the end but there are some things I disliked about the overall story. Anyway, it was entertaining enough to hold my attention so I will give it four stars.

Made me fall in love all over again!

Just when I thought I couldn’t love this book even more, Meg Sylvan and Aaron Shedlock blew my mind with the narration of A Game of Veils.

The way that Meg brought Aurelia to life you could feel the fierceness and determination in her voice that I had felt when I read the book the first time.

Aaron was able to capture each of the prince’s personalities to perfection, Lorenzo with his sweet and timidness, Bastian with his grumpiness and Raul with his flirty/broody ways, as well as Neven’s teenager attitude.

Having read the book previously I was able to pick up on things I didn’t the first time around while listening and it made me giddy hearing it.

The Royal Spares

I really enjoyed this first book in The Royal Spares series, the characters are well-drawn and the world-building is very well done as always. The story tells how Princess Aurelia arrived at Emperor Tarquin’s Court to fulfil an arranged marriage with Marclinus his son and heir. Only to discover that she has to compete to win this "honour" against twelve other court ladies. There is to be a series of "Trials" with the lady who is last leaving the competition but that is not all, she will also lose her life.

At the Court, she makes the acquaintance of four princes Raul, Bastian, Lorenzo and Neven the Emperor's foster sons and learns that they are second sons sent to stay in his palace to stop their countries from rebelling and have been there since they were only seven years old. Each had unique characteristics and different personalities and at first, they clashed with Aurelia whenever they could believing she wanted the throne for selfish reasons.

Each character has their own unique gifts, Aurelia's is healing but the true extent of the gifts granted to the princes is slowly revealed as the story progresses. Aurelia is calm and composed as she faces each trial, determined to make it through for the sake of her country and people although as she and the princes got to know each other I did like seeing her being herself with no guards up when she was with them.

I love the slow build-up between Aurelia and the three of the princes, Neven being much younger is still an unknown quantity as is his gift!

I love the way Eva builds a story, adding layers to the characters the more we get to know them and look forward to getting a bit more backstory for Aurelia in the next book. The cliffhanger ending of the book was a shock and caught me totally by surprise it was so very unexpected. I can't wait to see what happens next and how the guys react to it.

The narration of the story is by Meg Sylvan and Aaron Shedlock each of them gives a wonderful performance and brings all the characters to life.

A great start to a new series!

A Game of Veils was a good read all in all. However, it had a lot of information and I found myself having to go back and replay chapters or parts of chapters. It is the first book in the new series and I liked it enough to want to get all of the information so when the next one comes out I can be all in. The narrators were excellent at bringing the characters to life. I really love books that have both male and female voices, it really brings depth to the book.
I have read a few books in this genre and I have discovered that I really enjoy this genre.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who love book series, lively narration, and strong FMC’s.
I received a copy of this audiobook for free in return for an honest review.
