Kept you thinking

I liked it all. It was a great audio book and it’s been awhile since I have enjoyed one. So much that this is my first ever review after 10 years of listening.

Effectively keeps you guessing wrong

Looking back, I almost stopped reading by end of the first chapter. The story seemed to drag along so slowly at the beginning that I was tempted to skip ahead to see if it got better. I am glad that I stuck with it though. The suspense and unanswered questions finally grab you and the ending makes you feel that justice was served and the good guys came out on top...even made you think that a small town in Kansas might be a good place to live.

Excellent

Wow, didn’t expect this story to be what it was. Intricately weaved into a twisted mystery/suspense. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would recommend.

Main plot was great, but...

The murder mystery pulled me in at the start, and kept me from putting it down when the cheesy , starry-eyed, bodice-ripping scenes (which were not even well written) sorely tempted me to toss it aside. The novel would have been great without them , and they detracted from the overall effect. Yes, the relationship between Abby and Mitch is integral to the story, but this was a case where less would have been more, and all of the mooning and descriptions of Mitch's broad shoulders tapering down to his narrow waist disgusted me. So unnecessary, when the plot was so exciting and kept me guessing until the very end!

Ok and kept me interested

I was kept interested to know what happened next, but the plot had a lot of holes, once you knew what happened. The reader was great at narrating but took me out of the story when she tried to do some of the voices.

Wish she wrote more often!!

The first book I listened to by Nancy Pickard was, "The scent of rain and lightning." It's still by far my favorite, but this one did not disappoint! She is a great storyteller and I only wish she'd write more!

The Ending

I really enjoyed this book, but the sudden ending seemed very rushed to me and a bit unsatisfactory. Would the adults really stay friends? Not in any world I could imagine. And my most troubling question that didn’t seem answer, why did Mitch’s parent as send him away? I listened to the last several chapters three times and I feel this wasn’t answered. I really want to know darn it!
