About this listen

Emily Adams has reached a breaking point. Her boyfriend pushed her down the stairs, breaking her arm, and now she’s found herself in an unfamiliar city with 15 cents in her pocket and nowhere to go. She’s decided that all that’s left for her is to take matters into her own hands and put an end to her misery....

Until an encounter with a magic man in a dress changes everything.

In a story full of humor and heart, The Very Real World of Emily Adams shows that there is hope in darkness, triumph in tragedy, and the moment when things are at their worst is when you hold on the hardest, because you never know what good things are waiting for you on the other side of despair.

Beautiful words and a Beautiful Love Story

I had no idea what to expect… what I found was a beautiful written/read book with words to inspire and uplift a soul and a Love Story with lots of twist and turns and laughs, witty and I even cried …. OMGOSH you just have to listen/read it. I can see it made into a Movie. I will now buy a hard copy so that I can read and mark some of the very profound quotes of hope, forgiveness and self love.

I’m applauding and shouting for an encore!

The way the author was able to magically weave in and out of pop culture references, deeply profound sentiments, and an ever captivating narrative made me grateful she shared her wonderful gift of writing with the world through this book. Her debut novel is entertaining, thought provoking, uplifting, and wickedly clever (tracks instead of chapters? Genius! Song names as chapter titles? Brilliant! A gorgeous spaceman dressed in drag? Amazing!). Protagonist Emily is a such relatable character with a complex array of emotions and so much charm that the reader can’t help but root for her. Lipstick Rick is as wise as he is magical with enough inspiring quotes to fill a Pinterest board. I hope this imaginative storyteller has more stories in store for us. (Rain might say something here about repeating the word “store” so much in one sentence 😉.) I will be anxiously waiting to read an encore!

A great story

6When I first started this book I didn't think I was going to like it. I got the audiobook & I have to say I loved it. The best narrator for this story. The characters were a little different let's say but after a certain point it made sense. Emily ran away with her boyfriend & that did not work out well for her. When she met Lipstick Rick her world changed. He helped her when she needed it the most. She became a part of their group and had friends.. She tried to move on with her life & just when she knew she was in love Jessie tried to walk back into her life. He was mentally abusive to her and also caused a lot of her bad choices. She made her choice which caused some grief, regret & heartache. A story full of surprises. Great characters including Shemonsters that will keep you guessing. Like I said before the narrator will make you love each character. I would definitely recommend this story. I would give more stars if possible.

Great author HORRIBLE narrator!!!

The narrator is one of the worst I have ever listened to, but I know the author and thought the book was super creative and well written. That voice she uses for the men is super annoying!!

We are all Emily at some point

I had this as a review audible and loved the plot and depth of the character. I did have problems with the narrator. Her range for male voices is very narrow to the point of them sounding pretty much the same. That said, This is still an audible I would recommend.

When the worst has happened to you, when you have betrayed your family for an abuser, sometimes the only thing you want to do is stop hurting. Fortunately, Emily is rescued at the last moment by Rayn/Rick, and healing begins. Life takes on new meaning, the good and the bad, but I will leave that for you to discover for yourself. Her life still contains highs and lows, and of course, self-examination, but it is never boring.

Take a plunge and spend some time with a story that will make you hope, cry, and enjoy the depth of the characters involved.

Who wouldn’t want a “Lipstick Rick” in their life?

Emily is the type of character that I think a lot of people can relate to. Someone at her wits end and pushed to her breaking point. All is not lost... there is hope... there is Lipstick Rick!

Samantha J. Rose drew me into this amazing story right from the start. She is so creative and imaginative. I hope we see more.

This was the first narration by Bodine Boling that I’ve listened to. I was not disappointed. A very enjoyable performance.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Great, Enjoyable Read

This took me by surprise as it wasn't at all what I was expecting. This was a unique and quite different story. It was a good read and a bit cheesy sometimes as well, but a good kind of cheesy. This book made me laugh, cry and get angry - it was an emotional rollercoaster ride of sorts for me and it was a bit hard for me to read some of it as it hit close to home with some of my personal experiences in life. This story is a great one about life, learning, finding yourself, forgiveness, hope, and healing. I would love to say more, but I don't want to give anything away or possibly ruin anything. I would recommend giving this a read and checking it out.
The audio for this book was pretty well done also. The narrator did a good job reading the story and bringing life to the characters, story, and the world. I am hoping there will maybe be another installment to the story because there was an open ending, and it could go either way with continuing or the story being done.
Thanks to Immortal Works, StoryOrigin, and the author for letting me listen and review this interesting read. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

great story in so many ways

I have a like/dislike relationship with this story. the complexity of Emily, her reactions, shyness, trauma all were well done (though quite wordy.) The ramblings of her inner thoughts were complex and real but too prevalent for my taste. It slowed the action down. The info dumps were huge and also slowed the action down. there were beautiful and hilarious moments in the inner thoughts though. and LOL humor in the dialogue.

the narration was half brilliant half super annoying. first every male character sounds gay so much so that they blend together so you don't know who's talking. second the narrator was far to chipper sounding as she described all Emily's depressing thoughts. it did not jive. however there were moment of perfect delivery and all the stumbly, stutery moments were so well done and natural feeling.

Super cute

Such a cute well written story. Turns that you won’t see coming and parts that will make you laugh out loud.
