Publisher's summary

Lenny Labinsky is a bowling pro shop owner and coach who has a love/hate relationship with the word “average". While he enjoys helping bowlers improve their averages, people who settle for average frustrate him. Lenny has a magical ability to subtly teach life and business lessons through his coaching sessions.

Sam Jenkins, a college senior about to graduate, personifies average. Despite having the ability to achieve more, he lacks drive and motivation. He wonders why he should push himself when “good enough” gets you by.

Sam thought the Bowling Pro Shop internship would be the easiest way to check off the 40-hour “real-world experience” requirement to earn a business degree. Through the 10-week internship, Sam is challenged to build his “arsenal” of bowling, business, and life skills.

Whether you are just getting rolling or a seasoned veteran, the Up Yours Approach will elevate your results in life and business!

Wow! What a game changer

I’m not a bowler, but the title caught my eye so I downloaded it and I’m so glad I did! The characters were so relatable (Lennys the king of bowling puns!) and I could see a lot of myself in Sam. I loved how the book dipped into many different examples and stories but kept coming back to the main principles. It was an easy read and changed the way I thought about my role in my business. I loved this book and would recommend it for anyone that wants to be more than average.

Success Principles and a Bowling Story

Most Success Principle books are rooted in relating someone’s success in business athletics, acting, music, etc. The Up Your Approach author, Craig Hillier uses a bowling story to pass along time tested methods to succeed in business and life. Say what!?! I mean come on, before you start reading or listening to this book, I personally thought that I could hear a lopsided ball rolling down the alley. And for some of us unskilled bowlers the embarrassment of a gutter ball. Followed by the walk of shame back to the sitting pit. Having known Craig Hillier for decades, I had to give the book a chance.

Anyone who wants to better themselves will find an intriguing and different delivery of gaining insights in success principles. These principles are timeless. The delivery was non-typical; it had me captivated from start to finish.

For me personally and a success principle taught in the book, one must “Keep Rolling”. I have been in sales since my teenage years. On the outside it may look like I had it easy; things just went my way. Hardly, the case for me; I have experienced a lot of disappointment intertwined with my success. If there is one principle anyone needs to learn, or re-learn is to discipline your disappointments. It’s okay to be sad, just don’t stay there.

The another key business and success principle that is explained about its significance is “Define your Target”. Personally, I have found that work is not work when you know your “why”. I will admit, when this has not been clear in my life, work is tough. When clarity of your “why” exists, barriers are mere bumps in the journey to success.

Whether you are just getting your life and business career started, or seeking to get it onto a track of success and prosperity, invest in yourself, and read this book.

Unique and engaging delivery of life lessons

First self-help book I have read that is told through a story. A refreshing delivery (no pun intended) of relatable concepts for anyone looking to improve, not just bowlers. Highly recommended!

Loved it!

I was a bit skeptical to read a character building business book that uses bowling as its means of delivery. I bowl about once a year (if that), so I was concerned about it not being relatable. Turns out, it's a brilliant "approach" to simplifying vital principals to life and business. Now I can't seem to go through a day, without applying one the many bowling puns within the pages.

Whether you're finishing up high school, college, or a 20+ year veteran in your business, I can't recommend this book enough. When we forget about our purpose and "why", it's easy to become stagnant, or even spiral downward.

I've had the pleasure of getting to know Craig Hillier over the past couple of years. His desire to help as many people as possible, regardless of their abilities or background, is absolutely infectious. Beyond having an extremely impressive resume, the guy has a heart of gold. Highly recommend this book. A great gift and personal read.

Should be taught in high school

Praise for Craig Hillier’s book “The Ip Yours Approach”. I know Craig from the gym where be both take classes. Over the years as I have gotten to know Craig I found him to be a leader.
Recently, we had breakfast together and I learned that Craig started his career as a teenager selling Tommy Hopkins seminars. Early on in my career I loved listening to Tommy Hopkins. Craig has also been influenced by Jim Rohn, another one of my favorites. The book reflects the influence of these two great speakers.
Craig weaves his life lessons into the book and shows how anyone can achieve success if they follow the same. He talks about a young college student with no aspirations having a complete 180 degree turn.
The book is easy to read. Maybe a suggestion would be a workbook.
This book is great for anyone looking to up their game.
John
