About this listen

If these walls could talk, they'd scream.

The mind that brought you S'wanee: A Paranoid Thriller takes you deep inside the world's most private club.

College sweethearts Claire and Clay Willing are determined to start their married life independent of his rich and powerful West Coast family. But the tragic murder of Clay's older brother, coupled with his own stalled career, suddenly lures them to San Francisco and into the clutches of the Willing political dynasty.

Clay's parents welcome Claire with open arms and ensconce her in their exclusive private club atop Nob Hill, where she mingles with the eccentric Bay Area elite and struggles to maintain her identity in the all-controlling Willing clan.

But her in-laws are the least of Claire's worries as she unravels the freakish mystery of their son's assassination and uncovers the shocking reason she and Clay were brought back into the fold. With no way out alive.

Suspenseful and intriguing

Claire and Clay live a life away from Clay's wealthy and very political family, to make a life on their own. When Clay's brother gets assassinated they are called back into the spider web of Clay's family and … the Union Club.

Clay becomes a member of the Union Club and everybody in this club are like.. 'Well, this is just a club'. However, Claire who isn't used to this High Society life, walks into it open-minded, but suspects that a lot is going on in this club.

We see everything from Claire's point of view when she comes closer to revealing secrets and picking up threads.

The book had a slow take in the beginning and I was first captured two hours into it. There's a lot of small-talk in the start, some mysteroius elements and then again - nothing. However, if you have the patience, stick with it, because it turns into a compelling thriller after all.

Although I've enjoyed Andi Arndt's narration before and consider her one of the best I missed something in her performance this time. It lacked drama in her voice when Claire got anxious or scared. I missed some more action and the narration made me jump up and down in emotional despare. She did a good job with the voices, both male and female.

Wow! More!

The time zipped by with this audiobook. Excellent writing and excellent narration. Unique twists and no way one knows what's going to happen next. My only gripe is that I didn't want it to end, although I did really like the ending. I will definitely check out his other books.

Suspense, Intrigue & Thrills - Excellent Book!

What did you love best about The Union Club?

I loved the whole story from beginning to end. I am amazed at how Don Winston is able to write a book with so many layers and maintain a steady feed of intrigue and suspense throughout. The story is so well written that if makes you believe it to be true ... which would be a scary reality.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved how well the story was written. The characters are so well written and developed that you are able to develop a relationship with them. Don Winston is a master of his trade and is able to weave a story like none other that I have read. His writing manages to get a grip on you from the very beginning and does not let go until the end and even then you are left wanting more. Very few authors are able to do that for me. Also, the narration done by Andi Arndt was perfection. Her inflection and tone is pleasant to the ear. Her voice is crisp and clear and she portrays the characters superbly (especially Claire). Andi adds to the suspense & intrigue with her narration which to me, only enhances the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I actually did listen to this book all in one day. Technically not in one sitting as I listened to it in my car on the way to and home from work; I listened to it at work (thankfully I have a career that allows me to listen to my books); I listened to it when I got home and finished the book right before going to sleep. I simply could not stop listening. It is not very often I recommend a book to people other than my friends but I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, intrigue and thrills.
