Publisher's summary

An incisive case for trans justice from a powerful new voice

In this brilliant introduction to trans politics, journalist Shon Faye gives an incisive overview of systemic transphobia and argues that the struggle for trans rights is necessary to any struggle for social justice.

So often, Faye argues, trans people are understood as a "side issue," the subjects of a toxic and increasingly polarized debate which generates reliable controversy for newspapers and talk shows. This media frenzy conceals a simple fact: that we are having the wrong conversation, a conversation in which trans people themselves are reduced to a talking point and denied a meaningful voice.

With skill, rigor, and heart, Faye uncovers the reality of what it means to be trans in a transphobic society. In this compelling study, she explores issues of class, family, housing, healthcare, sex work, the prison system, and trans participation in the LGBTQ+ and feminist communities. What she finds, ultimately, is that when we fight for trans liberation, we fight for a better world for us all.

Perfect

I have an expanding collection of Pro and Anti Queer books. Of my Pro-Transgender collection this is of the best for pure analysis and balanced content. Shon Faye presents transgender issues within primarily Europe and occasionally the U.S in an informed and common sense manner which at times other books of similar intent overshadow with emotional lashing out and in-your-face comments usually within the first chapter- this quality which is repeatedly and understandably evident reduces the overall usefulness when recommending quality books to cisgender and heterosexual individuals, typically those which you want to inform but will instead be taken aback by in your face language that often negatively targets arrogant conservatives and by doing so also ignorant conservatives which are the demographic I wish to inform. Nevertheless this book acts as a perfect addition to the lackluster wealth of literary work in the non-fiction transgender genre for both supporters and dissenters of the movement.

Well Written/Narrated

Well written and narrated this book lays out the many challenges faced by trans people due to misinformation and discrimination. Many will find this book intetersting. I didn't learn as much as I hoped I would from this book.
