Publisher's summary

In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created?

Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

The answer lies in the Tone, the Toll, and the Thunder.

Featured Article: Excellent Dystopian Listens Like The Hunger Games

The popularity of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations has paved the way for so many great dystopian books and series in YA, imagining harrowing worlds where teens must fight for survival and define what life means to them. The enduring popularity of the series has proven that dystopian stories and the sometimes-dark futures they imagine are endlessly fascinating to our imaginations.

Out Like the Thunder

Overall, this was a great series! So many nuance issues that people could spark conversations over the possibilities. Very centric on life/death and the value of living. It's a series to make the readers think beyond and hopefully revel in their own mortality.

There were some parts that were too woke and made it feel a little heavy-handed. Beyond those, quite a wonderful trilogy. One of my favs.

This is just the perfect ending!

I have so many comments about the whole saga and its powerful allusions, but those will be shared on a different post on my blog.

I must be honest that while I was reaching the end of the book I was pacing like a caged animal. The stress, the pressure, the crumbling of events were too charged with anxiety. The Toll is all I was expecting from these finaly.

We start with a boom and we end it with a boom. It was quite a struggle and I felt so much annoyance and almost hate towards one character. It is incredible and sad how the human species will corrupt anything they have access to, power is corruption and corrupts everything, and at the end everything fell under its own weight.

I knew by the 38% of the book how it was going to end and I even post it on a group discussion here to leave records that I knew, and I read sceptical about it, and I was going to be so disappointed if I was going to he right. Although I was right, Neal turn things around one more time to give proper closure to the saga.

Totally satisfied! Incredible happy and so different and unique as it could be. Welcome to the top 5 books of my year!!

Great story 4th book please?

Just love this narrator he does so many distinctly different voices and accents well! Another amazing story I'm sad to leave this world. Feels like a wrap up but maaaaaybeeee the author is leaving the door open a jusy crack for a 4th book? Off to talk to Alexa now to see if she has gained any sentient knowledge yet.

A worthy end

Not what I was expecting after waiting a year but loved nonetheless. Time skips though

Beautiful

I love this Shusterman's lack of faith in humanity. His books are the thin line between fiction and worst case scenario. I think this book was also a beautiful balance between happy and not so happy ending. It left me feeling satisfied yes worried for the main characters I have come to love. Was very happy to stumble across this series in time for the toll to be realeased the day I finished the prior book.

Not sure why........

Ok. I understand the time difference in the book but I was able to follow it. The ending , yes it was obvious. And yes the pdf is a huge spoiler. But I like to be spoiled. Blame that on George Lucas. I knew the ending with the prequels. But I loved the book. I wasn’t disappointed at all. If you can’t follow it, then something is wrong with you. And I was able to follow the characters even with their name change. I read someone’s review they couldn’t. Great book. I wish, like the unwind series there was just one more to read. Or hear.

Great finish

As good as the first two and finishes an amazing story.

Same narrator does an awesome job.

If you read/listened to the first two books then you should finish it.

Not quite as good...

The story was good but lacked the suspense of the previous books. This one fell into place but more by not telling you what was going on and jumping around in time. It felt anticlimactic

Fitting and satisfying ending to a solid series!

I wish more authors would take their time and put as much into their series finale, as Shusterman did The Toll.

Great book and fantastic narration.
