For the '70s child, summer holidays didn't mean the joy of CentreParcs or the sophistication of a Tuscan villa. They meant being crammed into a car with Grandma and heading to the coast. With just a tent for a home and a bucket for the necessities, we would set off on new adventures each year stoically resolving to enjoy ourselves.

For Emma Kennedy, and her mum and dad, disaster always came along for the ride no matter where they went. Whether it was being swept away by a force 10 gale on the Welsh coast or suffering copious amounts of food poisoning on a brave trip to the south of France, family holidays always left them battered and bruised. But they never gave up.

Emma's memoir, The Tent, The Bucket and Me, is a painfully funny reminder of just what it was like to spend your summer holidays cold, damp but with sand between your toes.

Camping in the 70’s was a thing for us too, especially with our Dad, the references to fashion, music, cars and food was very nostalgic. Emma Kennedy’s writing is so funny but her narration is BRILLIANT, she tells the story so vividly that you can clearly imagine it all in your minds eye. Almost like listening to a friend just back from a trip.

Hilarious and familiar 😂

I listened to this book after seeing it listed in the end credits of the BBC one 6 part comedy, "TheKennedys". I enjoyed the telling of the book even more than the tv series. It was funny, dramatic, and real. It was wonderfully performed.

resilient family drama

After years of searching for this type of book, I finally have found it! It’s the perfect type of read when you’ve had a hard day at work, and then come home to watch the very serious news of what’s going on in the world. This is a soul-healing book if ever there was one.

Lovely, wickedly, funny must read

I loved it. What can I say? it did not disappoint. This poor family and their disastrous vacations kept me entertained for days. My wife loved it too. Highly recommended!

An exciting and hilarious listen!

I’m sure the book would be great to read, but you will miss something wonderful if you don’t listen to Emma’s narration.

Very very funny, though often frustrating, tales of family holidays gone very very wrong, expertly narrated by the extremely gifted author. it's truly a miracle Emma is still with us and her parents remained married after so many ghastly misadventures. I found myself exclaiming aloud in horror and issuing worthless warnings almost as often as I was bursting into helpless gales of laughter. Certainly recommend, though I wouldn't recommend listening in a public environment 🙂
