About this listen

From the bestselling author of The Neon Lawyer comes a page-turning thriller about a scrappy lawyer and his fight for justice.

Personal injury attorney Peter Game has a reputation: cynical, untroubled by ethics, and willing to take any case, anytime, in his pursuit of the win. He dreams of a sweetheart score that’ll make his name and net him millions. Then comes the lightning rod: a school shooting just outside of Salt Lake City. His client: the devastated mother of one of the victims.

What she wants is understandable—just not simple: to sue the manufacturers of the automatic weapon used in the mass killing. Game’s opponent, brilliant lawyer Brennen Garvin, is the least of his problems: the entire legal system, influenced by decades of pressure from powerful gun lobbies, is stacked against him.

For Game, this is the case of a lifetime. He’s just not sure his trademark rules will work in his favor. And he’s not sure he wants them to. As Game’s lust for victory gives way to a hunger for justice, he could lose everythin—or win back his soul.

Highly rated for:

The Story Revolves Around A Controversial Legal Case Involving A School Shooting And Gun Laws. While Some Found The Premise Interesting And The Storyline Gripping With Unexpected Twists, Others Felt The Plot Was Predictable And The Book Pushed A Political Agenda Against Gun Rights. The Narrative Explores Moral Dilemmas Surrounding Gun Violence, The Legal System's Handling Of Such Cases, And Corporate Greed. Despite Its Compelling Moments, Some Readers Felt The Book Contained False Information And Had Lengthy Sections That Dragged The Pace. Overall, The Story Provoked Thought On A Highly Relevant And Divisive Issue.

Great story

I loved this legal thriller. It kept me wondering what would happen next. It was especially fun to read because it is set in my home town.

Not as enjoyable as other books of Victor Methos

Not sure whether it was the story or the narrator but to me the lawyer was portrayed as a Jack Ass. I felt if this had been read by a different narrator I may have enjoyed it more.

Slow start - interesting finish

This is the first Victor Methos book I listened to and at first wasn't sure if I would like the writing style. It took many chapters to build the characters but the theme of the book kept me interested. There are many themes in the book based on crazy romance, missed chances, chasing the wrong things in life, and finding justice for a school shooting.

Once the book reached mid-point, I liked the writing style but there are a few obvious directions but it didn't distract from the storyline. The main subject is a controversial subject (guns) but the author does an interesting job presenting their side of the discussion. Added in is some political action but it doesn't distract from the storyline if the reader keeps an open mind.

A school shooting with one of the victim's mom as one of the main characters adds some perspective and motive for the main subject.

The ending sets up the reader for a potential series with the main characters. Overall, it is a good book that doesn't require intense attention to understand or determine the direction and ultimate ending of the book. I listened to it while working on a remodel project that didn't require listening to each component of the story.

Decent Job

The book ended differently than I expected. The ending was great, just different. I enjoyed that the characters were fully developed not just whitewashed. I felt welcomed I to the reality of the storyteller.

so enjoy everyone of his books that I've read.

I agree with the battle this lawyer is fighting about getting the military type weapons off our streets. But not hunting weapons or hand guns. By hunting I mean the type forge food for feeding their families. An outstanding story of overing your fears of failing and moving on.
