About this listen
How could it have come to this?
Five milksops sticking to her heels like horse manure. On a ship with a captain who cannot be trusted. On a voyage into the heart of enemy territory, teeming with cutthroats. In search of a lost legend that could vanish into thin air like a camel fart.
Time is crying out for change. A mysterious parchment finally leads Karek and his companions to their destination. But what they find there knows no laws, no faith, no mercy…

Story
The crow hissed: "Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t cut your throat here and now. One single damn reason." The prince froze with fear and said nothing. At last, his behavior was logical. His facial features had lost any order. Shivering, he closed his eyes in expectation of certain death. But then there was a whispering. "Could there be three reasons maybe?" She suppressed the reflex to laugh—she hadn’t laughed aloud for years and was not sure if the muscles needed were even still functioning.

Story
The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. Of course, that's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

Story
A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It's not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher's new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager's city.

Story
After a tragic mistake, Erevan finds himself transported to the work camp in Altheria. To the nobility, it’s an island-bound rehabilitation complex run by a powerful warden and staffed with short-tempered guards. To the inmates, ‘Alty’ is really a massive, city-sized prison. Thrown in with criminal humans, dwarves, and other races, Erevan must learn to navigate the island’s complex social system, as well as survive the sanctioned duels—the warden’s method of managing the convict’s anger and aggression. In Altheria, Erevan learns new smithing skills and forges unexpected alliances.

Story
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Story
With a knife in his gut, Rowan figured he was destined to become just another corpse littering the slums of Taureen. So he was fairly surprised to wake up in the back of a moving wagon with a couple of adventurers. Turns out that Rowan had been given something most street rats can only dream of—a second chance.

A Frustrating Disappointment
- By Julie Pickerill on 10-12-23
By: M.E. Robinson
And I have read a lot of similar books including the Gravedigger's son series narrated by Gildart Jackson which I also loved.
Everything is confused in a lot of ways. Lots of diverse people coming and going - just like in real life. I always am wary of the novel where the man and the woman can never be together by some twist of fate. So far - that doesn't happen here, at least not with the main protagonist - but maybe it will with other characters. I am also wary of melodrama. There are certainly very bad characters here, Some of the good characters die. But they are all interesting.
In the Krosann series the magic is limited or maybe even nonexistent. That's part of the thrill, we really don't know how it works. In this book the magic finally comes out, but it is pretty much unexplained as of yet.
I read a lot of the genre. There's no explicit sex in these, unlike some very popular fantasy lately (books by Rebecca Yarros or Sarah Maas). I don't want explicit sex in an audiobook, because the pool man will come over while I am in the backyard, or I'll be listening with the windows open as I stop at a downtown intersection. It's just awkward. Maybe if I were 13.
All I can say is I can't wait to read more.
Great Story with Great Characters
