About this listen

In a disintegrating and lawless near-future, a young man journeys north to a mysterious island owned by one of the world’s wealthiest men—and finds an entire new civilization waiting for him.

Ben is a painter from the crowded, turbulent city. For six months his fiancée, Cara, has been working on the remote island of Sanctuary Rock, the private estate of millionaire philanthropist Sir John Pemberley. Now she has decided to break off their engagement and stay there for good.

Ben travels to the island to try and win Cara back. After an arduous journey, he finds himself compelled to stay. But as Ben begins to traverse Pemberley’s kingdom, he begins to uncover the truth of the apparently perfect society the enigmatic Sir John is building. Is Sanctuary Rock truly a second Eden, as he claims—or a previously undiscovered level of hell?

Great story!

Very interesting story! As a fan of No Such Thing As a Fish, I wanted to hear more from the elves(fish?). This was the first fiction book I’ve read in a while and it was really fun!

Slow Start but Great Finish

I couldn't get into this book the first couple of chapters. It was unnecessarily mundane. But as the story progressed, The Sanctuary turned into a pretty captivating story of a cult-like leader trying to "save the world". The ending was unexpected. Overall, this book made my errands so much more entertaining.

For sure

For sure the author needs to find different ways of conveying “for sure”. For sure!

A really good listen.

I took a chance and used a credit for this. It turned out to be an interesting story and kept my attention through the entire story. The narration was delivered with the perfect balance of emotion. I was not familiar with this author’s work prior to this, but I will definitely read more from Andrew Hunter Murray.

The Need to Worship and Be Led is Strong

I wonder if the need to worship, the need to be led, and the need to believe in human infallibility is built in to us. The protagonist in this story needs to believe, wants to believe, is desperate for a savior, for a way to get out of what we’ve done to ourselves on this planet. The writing is so skillfully done, with carefully doled out clues along the way, that it’s very easy to not only empathize with the main characters but also to want them to be more than they are, to see past their human limitations, to understand their own lives in ways they clearly do not. This book is a psychological thriller in that we’re left wondering what each person is capable of but it’s also more than that. It’s a full commentary on our pathetic attempts at avoiding the hard work that defines what it means to be human, what it means to understand that we’re not special at all, and no one is coming to save us. Ever. The narration was fantastic as was the pacing of the story. Highly recommend.

You could have written a better book yourself

This is basically a collection of all the gruesome and gross things the author could think of. The story was completely unbelievable even though you’ve suspended disbelief. Don’t waste your time and money.
