About this listen
“A gripping novel about power, money, and secrets.”—Mindy Kaling
A daughter’s investigation into her family history threatens to destroy their legacy in a gripping novel about power, money, and secrets by the author of Token Black Girl.
On their Martha’s Vineyard estate, the Carter family prepares to celebrate. But when the billionaire patriarch dies right before his seventieth birthday, the media is quick to question the future of the multi-industry conglomerate that makes the Carters living legends. Amid the succession crisis, his daughter, Kennedy, is questioning her father’s past.
Kennedy is an aspiring filmmaker, and the documentary she’d planned to present at her father’s party begins an inquest into the life of a man she never really knew. A thoughtful outlier in an elite and fiercely guarded dynasty, she’s not interested in keeping up the appearances that define her impeccably poised mother or in the capitalist games her ruthless brother plays. Kennedy wants only to understand the origins of their empire, and the lethally ambitious man behind it. That understanding comes at a cost.
As a twisted history emerges, the fault lines in the family grow. Torn between morality and the promise of maintaining wealth, Kennedy must decide what’s most important—the Carter legacy or exposing the shocking truth of how it was built.

The next step in Ellie Baker’s marriage: divorce. She and her husband, Jonah, are heading to Florida to break it to the family. No great drama to share. After twenty years of marriage, they’ve just fallen out of love. Simple. Not to their college-age daughter, Maggie, who is devastated. Or to Ellie’s father, Frank, who grows as cold as a retiree can get in Orlando. As for Ellie’s mother, Bunny: no, no, no. She doesn’t want to hear it. After a dreadful weekend, Ellie and Jonah return home to New Jersey with hearts and minds still set on a split.

His debut novel was a resounding success, which made the publication of his second book—a total flop—all the more devastating. No mystery, no drama
The description is not accurate. 1/3 of the way the central mystery is revealed and then rehashed for the rest of the novel. Not at all like succession, way too optimistic that people will “do the right thing”. It had interesting history and behind the scenes of Ivy League schools but not enough to recommend it.

Stunning family saga
The constant twists and turns kept me interesting. I loved the character development even the distasteful ones. The way fortunes affect families was woven throughout.

Obsessed!
I was drawn in to the Carter family drama immediately. Danielle Prescod is an excellent storyteller in The Rules of Fortune, weaving a captivating narrative. Her descriptive writing brings each scene to life, making it easy to visualize the world she creates. The story is engaging and immersive, leaving me wanting more long after I turned the last page. A truly compelling read! I hope there's a sequel!

Engaging
The proverb “absolute power corrupts absolutely”is the overall of this book. I disagree with the review where it wasn’t engaging.
William wasn’t “light” enough to pass for white and in my opinion disliked being black. The author did attempt to convey how he did attempt to gain some form of morality with donations, building of schools.
Jacqueline and Kennedy were the compasses to begin to right the wrongs committed by William Sr and Jr.
The author naming the primary two women characters Jacqueline Kennedy was unique. Were they the melanin women versions of Jacqueline Ken easy who raised her children to give back? To be ambassadors of humanity.

Mindy Kaling Pick
It was good. Not a “new” story, lots of money is evil and all that. But still kept my attention and I was invested in the characters. Looking forward to more picks from Mindy. 👍
