Publisher's summary

From best-selling author Neal Stephenson and critically acclaimed historical and contemporary commercial novelist Nicole Galland comes a captivating and complex near-future thriller combining history, science, magic, mystery, intrigue, and adventure that questions the very foundations of the modern world.

When Melisande Stokes, an expert in linguistics and languages, accidently meets military intelligence operator Tristan Lyons in a hallway at Harvard University, it is the beginning of a chain of events that will alter their lives and human history itself. The young man from a shadowy government entity approaches Mel, a low-level faculty member, with an incredible offer. The only condition: She must sign a nondisclosure agreement in return for the rather large sum of money.

Tristan needs Mel to translate some very old documents, which, if authentic, are earth-shattering. They prove that magic actually existed and was practiced for centuries. But the arrival of the scientific revolution and the Age of Enlightenment weakened its power and endangered its practitioners. Magic stopped working altogether in 1851, at the time of the Great Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace - the world's fair celebrating the rise of industrial technology and commerce. Something about the modern world "jams" the "frequencies" used by magic, and it's up to Tristan to find out why.

And so the Department of Diachronic Operations - D.O.D.O. - gets cracking on its real mission: to develop a device that can bring magic back and send Diachronic Operatives back in time to keep it alive...and meddle with a little history at the same time. But while Tristan and his expanding operation master the science and build the technology, they overlook the mercurial - and treacherous - nature of the human heart.

Written with the genius, complexity, and innovation that characterize all of Neal Stephenson's work and steeped with the down-to-earth warmth and humor of Nicole Galland's storytelling style, this exciting and vividly realized work of science fiction will make you believe in the impossible and take you to places - and times - beyond imagining.

Full cast of narrators includes Robert Fass, James Foster, Tavia Gilbert, Arthur Morey, David Stifel, Charlie Thurston, and Kate Udall.

Very interesting.

a bit of a lull in the middle but picks up again around the moment the vikings raid a walmart.

A fantasy novel that reads as science fiction.

I have no patience for most fantasy. But, this book is a rare exception. The world is fully developed and the rules internally consistent and satisfyingly minimal. The story driven by realistic human motivations, rather than arbitrarily quests and artificial goals.

Funny

I did not expect humor but there it was and for once I enjoyed it. I often find it too heavy handed but it was smart here. If you get the jokes it's a bonus but if not this just reads like a fun time travel romp. It works both ways.

beautiful story intricately weaving time and space

if you are a fan of time-travel stories then this is likely to become a classic for you. it's fun to think about this as the circles and Circles of time travel wine their way through the story.

Very interesting story

Was quite good although it did drag a little here and there. Funny at parts too. Best part for me was pushing carts in the Walmart parking lot while listening to it being used as a point of interest in the story... won't way any more. Completely meta for me. Lot's of very well developed characters and all are believable and three dimensional. Will listen again in future.

Stephenson Satisfies

again. I have read and enjoyed everything he has published and it keeps getting better. The bureaucratic language of DODO at its peak was tone perfect and some made me cringe.

Great mix of sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure.

Dizzying fast paced adventure. I really enjoyed the story. I liked most of the voices. The voice of Tristen was not in line with the character. Regardless I would buy again.

Fun and engaging read

I enjoyed the book and the philosophical debate about history , technological development, and the making (and unmaking) of it. I wish more time would have been spent with the debate at the end of the story versus the time spent on telling how we get to that debate. In the end, though, a thoroughly enjoyable read.

A dry nautical captains journal

I finished this book at 2x speed just to get it over with. At the end of the 24hrs of a dull journal logs you can hear the boredom in the narrators voices. I kept waiting for it to improve then by hour 13 when I realized it wouldn't, I realized I was also in to deep. Spruce goose. Oops. Also, plot holes galore.
