About this listen

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are joined by Suspect heroes LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie, in this heart-stopping thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Crais.

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike keep their promises. Even if it could get them killed...

Elvis Cole is hired to find a woman who’s disappeared, a seemingly ordinary case, until he learns the missing woman is an explosives expert and worked for a Defense Department contractor. Meanwhile, LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, track a fugitive to a house filled with explosives - and a dead body. As the two cases intertwine, they all find themselves up against shadowy arms dealers and corrupt officials, and the very woman they promised to save may be the cause of their own deaths.

I have listened to nearly all of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels, but the one thing that has ruined a few is the narration of Luke Daniels, doing Joe Pike's voice. He sounds like he's got laryngitis and is struggling to speak. It's very distracting to listen to, and ruins the image of Pike. I find myself cringing when his character speaks. He needs to have a deeper, smooth, confident voice. A second narrator doing Pike would be a big improvement. The rest of Daniels' characters work ok....but not Pike.

Love the Cole/Pike novels, but.......

Although I loved the storu I wasn't overly impressed with the narrators. The voice-over for Joe Pike was particularly disturbing.

i have enjoyed every Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novel Robert Crais has written and this one is as good as all the rest. The narrator's do a great job giving the characters their own sound and add to the enjoyment of the story! Hope their will be another Cole and Pike story soon.

No one ruins a great book like Luke Daniels. The fact the producers don’t keep a watch on his mispronunciations of places is ridiculous, but what’s worse is his racist voices uses for PoC characters.

Robert Crais is a brilliant writer, but I cringe being forced to listen to Daniels read his wonderful characters. And as far as The Promise goes... it’s one of Crais better stories, and his pacing, dialogue, and characters are first-rate as always. But that’s where the positives for this audiobook end.

How can the producers allow Daniels to read PoC characters in such a grotesque, racist, almost black-face way??? It makes me wonder if the producers are merely lazy, stupid, or simply as racist as Daniels obviously is.

This is my third book read by Daniels and I will never purchase another audiobook read by him.

Luke Daniels is awful.

This audible interpretation of this book is phenomenal. Luke Daniels and MacLeod Andrews deliver award winning performances.

I’ve read every Robert Crais book and these performances were what I would’ve imagined in my head if I would’ve read the book.

Like his other books, Robert Crais nailed this one. It is yet another masterpiece. I highly recommend this book!
