About this listen

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are joined by Suspect heroes LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie, in this heart-stopping thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Crais.

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike keep their promises. Even if it could get them killed...

Elvis Cole is hired to find a woman who’s disappeared, a seemingly ordinary case, until he learns the missing woman is an explosives expert and worked for a Defense Department contractor. Meanwhile, LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, track a fugitive to a house filled with explosives - and a dead body. As the two cases intertwine, they all find themselves up against shadowy arms dealers and corrupt officials, and the very woman they promised to save may be the cause of their own deaths.

The gang's all here

All of the heroes in one story. I loved it.

But if a reader comes to this story cold, without reading the previous books, there's too much unexplained. If you don't already like the characters, there's not much here to make you like them.

Dog story gone wild

Would you consider the audio edition of The Promise to be better than the print version?

I always think the audio version of a written book is better except in cases where documents, charts, etc. are needed to understand a book. This wasn't one of those. This book used 2 readers and that component made this audio book a bit more special.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Promise?

I generally liked all the scenes involving the dog, Maggie.

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels and MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

Elvis Cole. He was probably the most interesting character in the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. The book was somewhat better than OK, but I had no desire to read it all in one shot.

Any additional comments?

The plot was somewhat complicated and in hindsight not very plausible. I would have enjoyed more situations of Maggie attacking bad guys.

Meh.......except for Maggie

This was a book I was really looking forward to but it wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. The only reason I gave it four stars was because of Maggie. Scott and Maggie team up with the "world's greatest detective" Elvis Cole and his partner and friend Joe Pike. They find themselves involved with a case of possible Islamic terrorist when Cole is hired to find a missing employee. Amy, the missing employee is looking to contact the terrorist group responsible for her son's death. Scott's path meets up with Cole's while on a police hunt for a known criminal and Cole is directed to the very same house where the criminal is found but in a deceased state. The criminal's killer gets a good look at Scott, Maggie and Cole and so begins his effort to eliminate all three. I did not like the way Scott's character was portrayed in this book. He seemed like a timid bumbling inexperienced police officer instead of the one portrayed in the previous book Suspect. Elvis Cole didn't come off to me as the one in the previous Cole books but then it's been a good while since I read an Elvis Cole book. Joe Pike was still true to firm. The introduction of the character John Stone was refreshing and I would enjoy reading about him in future books. The real star of this book to me was Maggie. I have been totally captivated by her since her premier in the previous book Suspect. I looked forward to every scene involving Maggie. This book was a bit different but overall a good read. I think the terrorist angle was a bit over the top and a bad choice plausibility wise. Looking forward to reading more about Maggie and Scott but on their own turf and the same with Cole and Pike, on their own.

Best Elvis, Pike, Maggie

I love Maggie the former Marine military now police dog. While I would have liked more Joe Pike in The Promise, Maggie almost fills the void. Maggie is more than a dog. She is a fully realized and important character complete with a unique world view and fascinating thoughts, experience, and love. Too good.

Crais does it again.

Crais does it again. Out god dang standing. Pike, Cole, and now Scott/Maggie had made it most enjoyable to listen. I have listen to all of the Cole/Pike series and haven't been disappointed yet!

Doesn't feel like Elvis and Pike

I enjoyed the book but not as engaging as other Cole/Pike books. They weren't really much of the story.

A terrific story

Craig has written a very good story. I highly recommend it to his readers. He has included 3 of his main characters in one story and brings them together in an exciting way.

Held my attention for 1300 miles

Excellent convoluted story with wonderful canine insights! Good guys become bad, bad good then everything is flipped.
