About this listen
Graduate students Zoë and Holli only mean to blow off some steam on their road trip to Las Vegas. But something goes terribly wrong on their way home, and the last time Zoë sees her, Holli is in the clutches of a sadistic killer. Zoë flees with her life, changed forever.
A year later and still tortured with guilt, Zoë latches on to a police investigation where the crime eerily resembles her abduction. Along with a zealous detective, she retraces the steps of that fateful night in the desert, hoping that her memory will return and help them find justice for Holli. Her abductor--labeled the "Tally Man" by a fascinated media--lies in wait for Zoë. For him, she is not a survivor but simply the one that got away.
With an unforgettable heroine, a chillingly disturbed psychopath, and a story that moves at breakneck speed, The One That Got Away is thriller writer Simon Wood at his finest.

Story
It's 1998, and for years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved, its secrets only speculated on by the outside world. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold Cleveland's largest bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost.

For Gwen Farris, the nightmare commences with the flash of a knife in a darkened parking lot.… That’s where Stephen Tarbell begins to exact his revenge against her for giving him a poor performance evaluation, for getting the promotion he believed was rightly his, and for being the woman who finally drove him over the edge. Somebody’s gunning for Josh Michaels. They must be. There’s no other reason why a stranger would run him off the road, taunt him with a “thumbs-down”, and leave him to die. Josh may have made some messy mistakes in the past, but who’s suddenly decided that he’s worth more dead than alive? As more and more near-fatal accidents befall him, there can be no denying it: he’s got a bull’s-eye on his back. But why? Is it revenge? Mistaken identity? Or is it something far more insidious?

Not bad
The narrator was a little distracting and the characters were just short of likable. Still a good survival story with a satisfactory ending.

intense
First time author for me. The book starts off saying it's for women who learn to protect themselves. In the beginning, it seemed as if it might be a procedural on actions women can take to protect themselves written around some fiction. But the book grew on me, the bad guy was one of those bad guys that was very efficient, seemingly could do no wrong. It seemed there was nothing Zoe could do to get away from him.
The author is a Brit who evidently married an American and currently lives in northern California where this book takes place.
Once I got to about the half way point in this story, I couldn't stop listening.

Pretty darn good
I really enjoyed this book. The pace was great, the characters relatable and the narration was good as well. Zoe is a great lead character in the story and Greening is a great supporting character. I liked knowing who the bad guy is and hearing his point of view. Brando's part in the story was very sad but I liked the inclusion of him in the mix. I would've liked a little more as far as what Zoe does with her life afterwards other than the abrupt ending given but overall, this was a really good book. I was gifted this book by the author/publisher in exchange for and honest review. Even though it was given to me I definitely feel it is worth the cost or credit.

Suspenseful mystery
This was a well written action packed and suspenseful read. I feel it’s a good book when you have to keep reading to get to the next part. While I like books to have a little romance, it did not. But I am very happy to have read this book it was excellent and the narration was excellent.

Better than expected; improved as went along
Would you consider the audio edition of The One That Got Away to be better than the print version?
I love being read to. I love the voices. Audio 1000x better than reading!!! I like all the different voices a talented narrator provides.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The One That Got Away?
The start, the attack in the apartment, the fire in the field, the final showdown.
What about Emily Durante’s performance did you like?
Very good performance. Liked variation that made Greening's voice. Beck sounded real.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, after a few clumsy moments/reactions, the beginning was harrowing. I also appreciated the sessions with the psychiatrist where Zoe was trying to learn to deal with survivor guilt.
Any additional comments?
The very beginning didn't grab me but then when Zoe got out of the shed & saw Holli and decided to make a run for it... I was hooked. Switching back and forth between Zoe and Beck maintained the suspense. I was a little surprised at what Zoe did at the end (especially if she wants to become a police officer) but can understand her decision.
